[EN] The energetic world context as well as airliners request for more economic operations
has leaded the engine manufacturers to develop new engine concepts, inducing a necessity of
new engine working fields understanding. In response to this, new investigation facilities will
have to be build. The new Transonic Wind Tunnel described in this report, will be one of
them, dedicated to perform aero-thermal analysis of turbomachinery blade rows.
The main innovation carried out by this new facility will be the possibility to run tests,
with the exotic combination of high Mach number (transonic) and very low Reynolds number,
in response to new engine architecture as the Geared Turbo Fan.
The present project is the first step of a new Transonic Wind Tunnel design. It consists
of a feasibility study, mainly orientated on the technological aspect. Although the design has
been largely orientated on Low Pressure Turbine investigation, an eye has been kept on other
applications. To do this, the requirements of the facility have been identified. Various
mathematical models have been developed, allowing the discussion of the facility
configuration, and the selection of the components leading to a high standard facility. This
project has made possible the definition of a complex facility working mode, improving the
CMT knowledge on such facility.
This analysis provides different validated solution range for one of the most critical
components; the fluid motion system equipment. The discussion of each solution has been
made in function of the desired degree of versatility for the facility and the financing
capacities availability, making the present project useful as a feasibility study of the new
facility, as it will help on the decision to carry on with the facility or not.
Finally the project concludes on the previous work necessary for a good and
appropriated detail design, as well as several critical steps of the detailed design.
