ABSTRACT The aim of this work is to do research on the applications of the use of Light and Color as a communicative, narrative and expressive resource in the 3D animation domain. For that purpose, we propose an analysis tool that applies, in a field work, on selected sequences of products from PIXAR Animation Studios. The results, provide data on the use of Light and Color as a communicative, narrative and expressive resource in the selected samples. Finally, the analysis of these data reveals the importance and usability of these visual components for the optimization of communication, storytelling and expression in 3D animation film. Besides this, the proposed tool provides a method for reflective and critical observation of the image focussed on the study of visual resources, techniques and strategies. The application of this tool, also provides practical and applied examples of the studied visual resources: Light and Color. Therefore, both, the tool and the analysis carried out, become a proposal for the development of visual literacy applied to 3D animation, a field that, nowadays, is in full expansion. The need and importance of visual literacy is reflected in various reports and statements prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science of Spain, agencies such as UNESCO, as well as the studies of several internationally recognized researchers. It is considered that in a world increasingly dominated by images, both, artists and viewers must have some knowledge of the visual language that enables them to decode and understand, not only the message, but also the quality of the audiovisual products that they created or simply, are around them. According to those reports and authors, to promote visual literacy in a world dominated by visual media, will enable, among other things, to develop a more effective communication, and also, to promote creativity, individuality, critical observation and visual enjoyment.
