RESÚMEN EN INGLES This thesis presentation, entitled “Self-portrait and self-representation: a field for experimentation and change of paradigm in the XXth century”, is based on the study of the conceptual implications underlying the theme of self-portrait and tries to formulate a definition for the concept of self-representation. This is a theoretic and interdisciplinary research, rooted on an artistic practice. The study have historical basis, mainly artists writings, art history, visual culture and semiotics.Parte superior do formulário The distinction between self-portrait, the recognition of the artist as an intellectual and self-representation are the three axis that structure the text of the thesis in three parts: The first seeks to define concepts (Face: signature, I: author, I sole self: author plural self), the second (Chapter 4) presents the practical artistic project, and the third (Annexes I and II) functions as an archive of the studied artists bios as well as their works. During the development of research, we addressed two key disciplines: painting and photography, as a new technique and pretext for the renewal of the pictorial tradition. In this context, we selected case studies related to the theme of self-portrait that, in some ways, anticipate stylistic and conceptual exceptions, such as certain series of work by Cindy Sherman, Yasumasa Morimura, Sophie Calle, Jorge Molder, William Kentridge , among others.
