Abstract (English) VIDEOHOLOGRAM AS AN ARTISTIC PRACTICE: AN EXPERIMENTAL PROPOSAL IN 3-D VISUALIZATION. This type of research forms part of a study of the holographic image and its optical principles. It investigates its aesthetic characteristics and various applications of this type of image in the world of art, as well as audiovisual and film. Its goal is to find an experimental way of use in interactive and performance art. Since the twenty-first century there has been significant development in pseudo holographic video forms, with various techniques and devices being created. This study aims to investigate the latest audio-visual techniques and the latest three-dimensional display devices used by many media, from advertising to fashion, in order to develop an artistic proposal which will give the definition of videohologram, consideringÊaudiovisualÊas a hybridÊthat uses the mediumÊofÊvideoÊand the aesthetics ofÊthe holographic image. The practice ofÊvideohologramÊallows us to playÊwith theÊviewer's visual perceptionÊand to somehowÊachieve a kind ofÊimmersionÊin another reality,Êwithout the need forÊexternal devicesÊto amplifyÊthe senses.Ê ThisÊtype of experimentÊleads usÊto studyÊlarger fieldsÊofÊperception such asÊspatial andÊkinesthetic. The work carries the objective to explain and systematize the use of video hologramÕs resource, through different applications, examining all aspects, characteristics and component elements. Using this approach, the research examines current technologies and their effectiveness as tools for artistic creation, both in terms of representation as well as the activation of interactive practices in hybrid spaces. Motivated by the interest of showing the evolution that has led to previous techniques, which in turn have enabled the creation of this new form (the video hologram), we assume that the pseudo holographic technique creates a different and unique production in the various types of media, including: film, advertising and digital scenography. This research is characterized by a work methodology procedure based on two phases: one being practical-experimental and the other, theoretical-critical. The confluence of these two phases forms part of the joining of two types of methodologies: the synthetic-scientific and humanistic-analytic, creating a meeting point between theory and practice, as well as art and science. The practical part has been worked on at Medialab-Prado, a centre based on digital culture, where the prototypes and testing have been developed. The scope of the project is framed by a few visits to other research groups: the Zaragoza Holography Laboratory and Advanced Visualization Group of the URJ in Madrid and the CSR4 Visual Computing (Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy). The theoretical part involves the study of visual perception theories (William James, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and James J. Gibson). The concept of the hologram is seen from its aesthetic and artistic perspective (Margaret Benyon) to the concept of telepresence (Eduardo Kac). Also, specific books about holography have been consulted (Jeong, Mc Crickerd, Collados Torralba, Oliva Molina) as well as online sources about 3D display devices, apart from the scientific papers of ACM SIGGRAPH. The results presented have been obtained through experimental tests. Those that are mainly constructed for this thesis have been instrumental in reaching the systematization and definition of video hologram, especially with the VISIONS project. The purpose of this project has been the research and the use of certain specific characteristics of the holographic image, with the optical study of the different sets of reflections (through the use of transparent Êmaterial) Êto achieve the visual effect of the figure-object floating in the air, Êconnected to the concept of virtual image.
