Summary This work has been motivated by the great demands students and professionals face today on acquiring communicative competence. To carry out this work, the progress in both production skills (written and oral skills) by means of two different teaching methods is compared. The groups of students belong to the Polytechnic University of Valencia, in Valencia, Spain. Three control groups follow a more traditional method in the learning of English as a foreign language. Two experimental groups follow the simulation and gaming methodology. The objective of this research is two-fold: on the one hand it seeks to verify the hypothesis that the groups undergoing the simulation and gaming methodology with a telematic simulation progress significantly in developing the production skills. On the other hand, this research seeks to contribute to the field in search of innovative methodologies merging investigation and professional practice within the field of education. Materials and resources are specified in addition to statistical results. Results prove that those groups carrying out ICONS telematic simulation experience better outcomes in the production skills.
