ࡱ> ,.+ Kjbjb 4ooK~~~~~  T J~~~~~~~Z Z $0T~D D:    Arte de Escribir Exemplares de diversas sortes de letras de Manuel Barata 1590/1592 Abstract This study lies in the field of the written and visual cultures and the object of the study is the book of Portuguese calligraphy, samples from many varieties of letters taken from Manuel Baratas polygraphy, dated from the 16th Century, a unique piece in the Portuguese national graphic panorama: Exemplares || de diversas sortes de letras, || tiradas da polygraphia de Manvel Baratta. Throughout the 16th Century, this singular book was published twice - in 1590 and 1592. We set ourselves within the subjects of Calligraphy and History of the Ancient Book in Portugal and aimed specifically at researching the calligraphic work and the printed work. As far as Manuel Baratas calligraphic work is concerned, there were several items analysed: the number of styles present and graphic options chosen; the description of typologies conceived by the author, both in form and aesthetics; the identification of the modifications of the models drawn by Manuel Barata in comparison to his Spanish and Italian counterparts; the comparison of the typologies presented according to the two editions. As far as the written work is concerned: we researched the extent of the intervention of the editor/bookseller Joo de Ocanha; we compared the editions from 1590 and 1592; we tracked down and quantified the number of copies existing up to the present; we identified the techniques used in the mechanical reproduction of calligraphy; we located the origin of the papers through the filigree work; we compared the paging sequence, taking into account the existing samples and the dates of edition. Although it was not the specific goal of this investigation, Manuel Baratas biographic information was also researched and, as such, unknown and unpublished information was discovered, especially in what concerns his birthdate, academic studies and work done in the courts of kings D.
