SUMMARY The research developed in the present Doctoral Thesis, focuses on the figure of the restoration Professor Luis Roig d'Alos (Valencia, 1905-1968). He developed his work in the field of conservation-restoration between the thirties and sixties. At that time, in Spain, the art work intervention criterion followed by the artists was far away from the idea of ??conservation we know today. This work, before commenting the work of Professor Roig d'Alos, analyzes the situation of the restoration in Europe and particularly in Spain, highlighting the tremendous gaps existing in this field, and the scarcity of scientific research information channels. From here on, and through inquiry into the Roig Picazo family archives and into the different Spanish and Italian institutions with which Roig d'Alos was related, it has been elucidate his developed career as a sculptor, restorer, professor and researcher, highlighting their continued search for answers through controlled experimentation, developing "master formulas", techniques and intervention processes with proven efficacy. In the field of conservation-restoration it must be emphasized that he was a pioneer in practicing and teaching modern restoration. He launched in Valencia in 1940, one of the first subjects of restoration in Spain, using modern criteria, procedures and techniques that still took decades to spread nationally. We refer to such issues as: the execution of a preliminary examination of the art work in order to recognize materials, techniques, and damages, by using advanced photographic techniques such as ultraviolet photography; the use of vacuum table invented in Germany; the use of reversible materials in the various restoration processes; the use of restitution criteria clearly advanced for its time, as the neutral ink; or the intervention process documentation with data about before, during and after the restoration. In short, the research has shown the importance of the professor Roig d'Alos for the development of modern restoration in Spain, especially for the restoration trajectory in Valencia, where his advanced students continued his enterprising line placing his research in the top of the national scene. Likewise, the research followed in this thesis has allowed us to develop a protocol for the recognition for the recognition of restorers that due to their career and outstanding contributions must be in the RESCATE database. Database elaborated within the Research Project of the National Plan "Historical Archive of Spanish restorers". This database will make possible to have an overview of the history and evolution of the conservation and restoration in Spain during the last two centuries.
