THE PALOMINO’S WALL PAINTINGS OF THE SANTOS JUANES’ CHURCH: STUDY AND APPLICATION OF A NEW SUPPORT EUROPEAN DOCTORAL THESIS PRESENTED/DISPLAYED BY: Pilar Soriano Sancho DIRECTED BY: Julia Osca Pons and Pilar Roig Picazo The present doctoral thesis is about the historical evolution of the detachments of mural paintings. The main objective of this work is to understand better the history of the wall paintings detached from the vault of the central nave of Santos Juanes’ Church and its conservation state. This paintigs were removed from their original support by means of the strappo technique and relocated on a new plywood support, which, nowadays, is not considered appropriate anymore. With the aim of getting to know which support would be the most suitable for these paintings, we have carried out a theoretical research into the evolution of the application of wall paintings detached throughout history on a new supports. All studies have been carried out on a piece of mural painting detached from the central vault of Santos Juanes’ Church, to extrapolate, later on, the conclusion to the rest of the vault. Prior to applying a new support to these paintings, they need to be dectached from the the plywood support protecting the painting before separating both layers. In order to find the proper protection, different samples, as similar as possible as original, have been made (support+pigment) and then they have been tested with different adhesives. To find out which adhesive leaves fewer remains on the pictorical surface, we have conducted some test like: Furier Infrared spectroscopy analysis, a comparision of pictures taken under an optical microscope and colorimetric measurements. Once the best system and the best adhesive for this treatment have been found, we have appied both of them on a piece of painting of wall painting from the vault of Santos Juanes’ Church. We have analyzed several samples supports in laboratoy, to conclude the materials to be used and find out which support is the most suitable for these paintings. Once the original painting has been separate from the plywood support we have applied the new support to him. Analysis has also been made of anchorage systems of new supports to the wall. Besides, we have analyzed the anchorage systems of new supports to the wall and we have made some laboratory samples. Finally, we have made several proposals of anchorage systems of new supports to the wall. Nevertheless, the results of these tests have not been applied onto the real work of the vault of Santos Juanes’ Chuch. Thus, we leave open this research line for the future.
