ABSTRACT

The evaluation of the achivements and the efficiency in the health systems are a central goal in the research about health economy. In this thesis it is made an analysis of the achivements and performance of the health systems, starting with a general overview until arriving at a analysis micro of the efficiency. 

- In the first place, this thesis starts with an analysis macro wich evaluates the achivements in health of two contries groups (european and southamerican contries) by means of multivariant analysis. It has been taken as variable representative from the achivement in health, the life expectancy, and it has determined wich health, cultural and social variables determine it in greater measurement.

- Next, it has been identified Italy as the country wich shows greater similarities with Spain as far as health system organization and epidemological, cultural and social characteristics, with the purpose of studying both systems and determining the strengths and weaknesses.

- Finally, and going down to an analysis micro, it has studied the performance of the Valencian Region hospitals by means of a  efficiency study of some health services of these hospitals. For developing this study it have been used nonparametric technics, more concretely DEA model (Data Envolment Analysis), with the purpose of classifying the health services based on its efficiency/inefficiency.
In addition, it set out an alternative tool of measurement of the efficiency, concretely are constructed two indicators of easy handling wich can be of greater utility at level of hospital management. The validity of these indicators has been verified with statistical methods.
