SYNOPSIS A PERSONAL LOOK AT THE RELIEF IN THE CONTEMPORARY GRAPHIC ART. THE BLOCK MOULD LIKE DIE. This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the development of a personal process of manufacturing dies for the engraving making moulds. The work is divided into two blocks; the first is composed of one chapter which examines the research and the information of the historical records of the relief, the matter and the use of the moulds in the world of graphic work’s, and also the analysis of the artists’ work more representatives. This first chapter takes an in-depth look at the relief in the contemporary graphic art and the technical discoveries of this quality. The view goes from the Artistic Vanguards appearing a new interest for the matter and the relief in artists works, through the second part of the twenty century when the called “material engraving” was influenced by the techniques of sculpture until the present time. The second block is about the method of the construction of dies and is composed of five chapters. The first chapter approaches raw materials of dies; the synthetic resins and the silicones. The second is one of the most important Thesis chapters covering all the engraving dies construction through the process of moulds and the comparative research of the synthetic materials used in each die. The third chapter looks at printing dies. The use of the dies in the printing has been analysed, furthermore, the method of inking, the resistance of the pressure and the aesthetic effect. The fourth chapter presents research and support, further uses in the graphic work, the paper, and the use of the paper pulp like a essential technique to get relieves in the graphic work. The fifth and final chapter contains one of the most important aspects, Safety measures, which are very important when people work with dangerous materials and equipment.
