Universidad Politécnica de Valencia Departamento de Dibujo Tesis: Los paisajes de Agustin Abarca, aportaciones a la pintura chilena Alumno: Efraín Teüas Gutiérrez Tutor: Dr. José Saborit Viguer Resumen Inqlés The justification for this research project is presented, noting the importance of the landscape genre in Chile, considered a national characteristic, and the presence of Abarca within this genre. It stresses the relevance of addressing the study of this painter's work, which, up until this investigation, no methodical studies have been carried out. The length of time in which Abarca's work is studied is defined as from 1904 (his initiation of artistic activity) to 1953, the year of his death. It then identifies the research's objectives, which are: a) to catalogue the pictorial works (oil paintings) of Agustin Abarca, generating a significant archive of works; b) to identify the elements of Agustin Abarca's work, as well as to interpret their meanings; c) to study the influences of the moment's artistic context on Agustin Abarcas work; d) to elaborate on these elements and judgments, that will help us point out Agustin Abarca's contributions to landscape painting in Chile up until 1953; e) to define elements in Agustin Abarca's work which correspond to influences of the European painting schools that impinged upon Chilean landscape painting, and to determine its influence and reformulation; f) to provide interpretations of Abarca's forms of incidence and expression, from what we might call a general theory of landscape. This added immediately assumptions to the investigation: a) the work of Abarca was a significant contribution to the landscape painting in Chile, and b) the work of Abarca is testimony to the introduction in Chile of European pictorial movements, but with the consequent transformation that new contextual conditions require, thus changing its original features, and arriving to a configuration of Abarca's work that is distinct.
