ENGLISH SUMMARY This doctoral thesis focuses on the study of the treatment of cultural specific items in A Man for All Seasons, by Robert Bolt. Starting from the assumption that literary texts are products of the culture where they originate, a literary work shows its belonging to its culture by means of some elements which are known as cultural-bound items. The importance of cultural-bound words is reinforced by the fact that Translation Studies currently consider translation as a cross-cultural activity involving two cultural entities, that is, the source culture and the target culture. Furthermore-, literature on drama translation highlights the scarcity of studies on theatre translation, apart from the difficulty that rendering a theatre play involves, due to several reasons. Firstly, the dependence of a playtext on the cultural source context is bigger since theatre is an artistic expression of society; and secondly because of the duality of channels that take part in it: the linguistic and the semiotic, which become evident in a play through the text and the paratext, both of them having an interdependence relationship. Nowadays, Translation Studies emphasize the importance of empirical studies based on the analysis of real texts. A Man for All Seasons, by Robert Bolt, is a highly contextualized play depicting several historical facts that led to the establishment of the Anglican Church, and with which the average reader of the source culture is more familiarized. Apart from that, Robert Bolt’s dramatics has some specific characteristics that appear in the text, as the use of language, the symbolism and the deliberate use of historical sources. Consequently, the objective of this thesis is to make a study on all the aspects that are related to the specificity of this theatre play. Research on the historical events and the author’s dramatics, together with the problems that cultural-bound terms posit, is the background that enables us to identify the cultural-specific concepts in A Man for All Season. A second stage is the analysis of the procedures that have been applied in its translation into Spanish, Un Hombre para la Eternidad, by Luis Escobar. In order to achieve that, a textual-linguistic comparison is carried out taking as a dramatic unit the replica. Then, a classification of cultural items is drawn up and the techniques followed in their translation, followed by a selection of relevant examples illustrating each category.
