ABSTRACT These are years of architectural development and interior refurbishment in the urban planning of the city of Valencia, with the opening of new urban thoroughfares, modification or alteration of the existing ones, building in the urban expansion area in the “calle Colón” and the construction of new buildings such as the City Hall main facade in 1905, the new “Estación del Norte” (North Station) in 1906 and the Post Office building in 1910 and, a little later in 1914 the “Mercado Colón” , among others. After several attempts of initiating the construction of a new market (1869, 1874 and 1907), it is in 1910 when the Valencia City Hall announced a new national tender for the construction of the new “Mercado Central” (Central Market). Six different proposals were submitted and it was settled in favour of the the Catalan architects Alejandro Soler i March and Francisco Guardia i Vial, both of them collaborators of the well-known Catalan architect Luis Domenech i Montaner. The Central Market building works started in 1904 and ended in 1928. The scope of study that this research work examines covers: the building historical context, the urban area where it is placed, the architectonical influences it takes up, the singular contributions by which it is defined, and the detailed graphic analysis of the architectural units that constitute its continent. Collecting each of the architectural typologies by which it is defined: metallic structures, ceramics, stained glass leaden windows and stone elements. The treatments and techniques used for the replacements and their restoration are indicated. More than five thousand photographs have been taken with their subsequent correction and rectification. Each of the elements purpose of this study has been drawn and analysed. In this way we have been able to provide a complete catalogue of all the worked units. We have now individualized technical indexes for each of the constructive elements that allow us to know their chromatic composition, dimensions, linking system (if any), ornamentation type, location, pathologies they have suffered and the intervention for consolidation or restoration used. As a result of this research work not documented data arise, at least up to now, such as the changes in the original design project and what was actually executed.
