The construction of the Cathedral of Antigua Guatemala in the 17th century from the pictorial documents

[EN] In 1678, the painter Antonio Ramírez elaborated a picture explaining the condition of the works of the cathedral of Santiago de Guatemala (now la Antigua Guatemala), a picture that allows us to establish the evolution undergone by the cathedral from the second half of the XVII century to its current state. Throughout this evolution, we want to highlight those construction elements that have been able to withstand not only the course of time, but above all, the force of the numerous earthquakes that have affected Guatemala since 1678 until today. In addition, Ramirez's work offers a series of brief but very illustrative brushstrokes on the organization of a construction in the second half of the XVII century, data that enriches the history of Guatemalan colonial architecture.

Matter, material, architecture. The tectonic conception between spontaneous consciousness and critical consciousness
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-12-21) Rociola, Giuseppe Francesco
[EN] Talking about of place and matter as indissoluble terms of architectural practice could at first appear tautological, because of the essential link that makes them participating in the construction of anthropic structures. But nowadays it has become of utmost importance to emphasize it, in the light of the profound changes that concern the architecture in the last decades, during which the importance of technology as a value in itself that summarizes all the meanings of the project has questioned the link always existed among materials, building and language, as expression of a type-morphological world in which to recognize themselves collectively. In this sense it may be useful to analyze some nodal points characterizing developments and discontinuities of this relationship, to investigate the role of memory as a "working theme" of architecture, performed above all through materials, and to highlight the importance to seek a critical link between place and type read in the ontological dimension of the building, that has no nostalgic or historiographical purpose, but on the contrary it is necessary to root the project into a cultural palimpsest that allows the present of construction to be dense of social meanings.

Evaluation of the Structural Stability of an Octagonal Dome with Meridional Cracks. Case Study: Temple of Santa Lucia, Ambalema, Colombia
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-12-21) Olmedo Montoya, Jorge; Niglio, Olimpia; Brigith Romero, Karol
[EN] This work performed a comparative analysis between the construction process carried out when building the dome at the Temple of Santa Lucía, in Ambalema-Colombia and the typical process of an octagonal dome. Additionally, the structural stability is assessed of the dome of the case study against service and dynamic loads. To compare with the case study, known domes were taken as examples from structures in Italy and Spain. The analysis includes a study on the dome’s geometry and the constructive errors found. Methodology: The dome’s stability was evaluated through structural analysis software for which the dome was simplified into a system of four articulated arches. Conclusions: As a result, it was found that the dome of the temple of Santa Lucía does not have a system to counteract lateral thrusts (a drum or its similar), which permitted the appearance and widening of meridional cracks. These cracks propagate from the base to the crown, but do not compromise the structure’s stability for service loads. The analysis for seismic loads indicates that the dome is at risk of collapse upon seismic events, even of moderate magnitudes. Originality: The study is aimed at architects and engineers interested in the theme of restoration of historical structures.

Design and comfort in office space
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-12-21) Lepore, Michele M.
[EN] The theme of office space is of particular interest because it is a sector strongly involved by technological development. The high concentration of plant engineering systems makes it essential to the attention to environmental parameters and to research on the quality of the relationship which binds man to artificial dimension of built space. In the design of office spaces, the general objective must be to be able to achieve a new working environment relationship. A ratio in which optimal balance is always sought in terms of igrothermal, acoustic and luminous comfort conditions, without noting that the psychological and sociological component plays an important role among the environmental factors, and this significantly interferes with the conditions of physiological comfort. The following work is an essay on the subject.

Selecting and Installing Energy-Efficient Windows to Improve Dwelling Sustainability
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2017-12-21) Friedman, Avi; Matheson, Morgan
[EN] Windows play a significant role in achieving comfort in buildings by letting in natural light, solar warmth, fresh air and permitting outdoor views. On the other hand, poor quality windows can be the source of overheating or unwanted infiltration or exfiltration of air. Quality windows, therefore, influence the dwelling’s energy consumption and consequently its sustainability. Heat losses through the building envelope can occur in any of three mechanisms: conduction, convection and radiation. In all cases, windows are the “weakest link”. As such, windows represent the most important investment in the construction or renovation of any dwelling. They are also highly variable in price, appearance and performance, making their selection an ambiguous and sometimes difficult process. This paper examines a window unit’s energy performance and provides guidelines for its selection, installation and integration into the home’s design.

[EN] The concept of "memory" has different meanings when analyzed within specific cultural contexts. In general, the memory expresses the ability of man to keep track of events, information, sensations, ideas, experiences, and recall this consciousness as soon as certain motivations make necessary the contribution of past experience.
