Francisco Íñiguez Almech. Drawings by a historian of Architecture
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Montes Serrano, Carlos; González Presencio, Mariano
[EN] Francisco Íñiguez is well known for the work he did from 1933 onwards as an architect preserving the architectural heritage of Spain. In particular, he is celebrated for having been the main mover and principal worker in the recovery and full restoration of the Palacio de la Aljafería in Saragossa. However, he is also prominent by reason of his architectural drawings, with which he illustrated in his articles and books the buildings that he was studying.

The first buildings on the web site: early manifestations of Architectural offices on the Internet (1995-2000)
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Juan Liñán, Lluis; Maruri González de Mendoza, Nicolás; Fundació Bancària Caixa d'Estalvis i Pensions de Barcelona
[EN] This paper compares some of the first websites launched by architectural offices in the second half of the 1990s. The study reveals, firstly, the main constraints posed by the World Wide Web to the public dissemination of architects’ production and, secondly, the two strategies that would rule the online communication of architecture ever since. On the one hand, corporate offices like SOM or Foster and Partners understood the new medium as a tool that would facilitate the dissemination of the office’s identity. To harvest this potential, their work had to be published online in a succinct, interactive, and stable fashion by means of photographs and renderings. On the other hand, emergent offices such as MVRDV and Snøhetta decided to use the new medium to push the boundaries of their work and to test new techniques of representation and graphic expression.

Architectural representation in non-specialist press. The case study of ABC and Blanco y Negro
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Ruiz Colmenar, Alberto
[EN] Historically, the dissemination of topics relating to architecture in the daily press has needed a visual component to help a non-specialist public understand the m. Although this contribution was mostly based on photographic images, occasionally manual graphic representation devices were used. Selecting some representative examples published in ABC newspaper at different points during the period in which Spanish architecture strived towards “modernity”, this historical analysis focuses on the use of graphic resources in the treatment of architecturaltopics in the press, and also shows how these resources aided its dissemination and progressive acceptance in Spanish society.

Saul Steinberg. Words on the drawn thought
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) García Gil, Luis; Raposo Grau, Javier Francisco
[EN] Today seems like a good day to write, and show in this article, some of the research that has been done, over many years, on the drawings of Saul Steinberg, and which we would like to share with you our attempt to understand and naively master the thoughts of Saul Steinberg, without being able to do so (Figs. 1 and 2).Steinberg’s sharp eye will always infiltrate the lines and colours with which a cartoonist tries to capture life. Somehow, seduced by his images, we recognize ourselves on many occasions trying to emulate the subtle languages of Saul Steinberg.

From the Bauhaus to the Fab Lab. The digital revolution of learning by doing
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Santos Arias, Fabricio
[EN] Digital fabrication has revolutionized the pedagogical model of the experimental workshops that have been in force since the Bauhaus, leading to the worldwide network of Fab Lab connected laboratories. The emergence of CAD/CAM, the personal computer and the internethave influenced the methodology of project-based learning implemented in architecture schools. The maker movement updates the concept of learning by doing, bringing invention closer to education and questioningthe regulated teaching of traditional technical schools due to the rise of knowledge shared on the internet through digital learning platforms. Online on-demand training and offshoring personal production are the foundation of education in the times of the fourth industrial revolution that fosters synergies between previously hermetic disciplines and is moving towards a more sustainable intelligent manufacturing.

Panoramic viewing system for living spaces. A chromatic interaction project between the elderly and the architectural space
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Torres Barchino, Ana María; Cabezos Bernal, Pedro Manuel; Delcampo Carda, Anna; Baviera Llópez, Eduardo María; Departamento de Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio; Agencia Estatal de Investigación; European Regional Development Fund
[EN] The increase of the population age drives to a new focus of study, the elder people. Specifically, the impact of architectural environments on physical, sensory, and cognitive capacities of the elderly is a study subject of growing interest. And so, it becomes necessary to researchabout the interaction between the elderly and the constructed environment. Accordingly, architectural simulation through VR goggles provides an environmental perception introducing the “immersion” concept and allows for the research tasks using innovative techniques. Aiming to fill the gap in the research field regarding the senior people and their visual perception of architectural space, this paper develops a virtual simulation system of architectural environments to conduct the colour research within the framework of a broader research project (MODIFICA). Thus, an online interactive tool is created, considering the user visual ergonomics, to be used to assess architectural environments from anywhere with an internet connection. Finally, this tool has been validated through its application in a concrete practical case, with senior participants.

The experimental colour composition process at the Real Club Náutico of San Sebastián, polychrome building
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Pérez Martínez, José Javier; Senderos Laka, María; Leon Cascante, Iñigo
[EN] The Real Club Náutico [Royal Nautical Club] of San Sebastián has become an icon of Spanish rationalism and, more specifically, of nautical architecture that is normally associated with the colour, white. However, documentation of the day reveals a polychrome building in harmony with the new architectural forms of expression. The experimental and chromatic test process carried out by Aizpúrua and Labayen on the building has been defined, identifying different phases in the architectural colour composition not described before. A thorough search for photographs has been carried out to determine these phases, classifying them chronologically by means of painstaking dating work. These phases have been characterized by narrowing them down in time, graphically representing them, describing their differences, and seeking the causes that led to these changes. The aim has been to meticulously restore the historical, architectural and symbolic value of the building.

High fidelity. The immature use of digital images for architecture
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) García Crespo, Jose María
[EN] As regards architectural digital design, computer rendered images seem to be the least accomplished and most controversial feature whereas other graphic tools have successfully developed in the realms of architectural creation and production. The wish for authenticity associated with this kind of rendering can trigger a number of malfunctions The search for role models, the fast obsolescence prompted by the consumer’s increasingly trained perception, the loss aversion factor, the unrealistic innovation expectations, and the exclusivity originated by technical complexity, in the pursuit of achieving status or concealing faulty approaches, can be counted among the factors that can help us to understand and foresee the limitations in front of us.

Alvar Aalto: the link with Jean Arp and the internal structure of biomorphic objects
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Jové Sandoval, José María; Rodríguez Andrés, Jairo
[EN] Alvar Aalto and Jean Arp converge in the early thirties. This means another step in the creative process of the Finnish master. The study delves into this artistic link and Aalto’s, singular and not casual at all, parallel experimentation with free forms. A foray into a brief sequence of works by the Finnish architect during those years, based on an analysis of the most significant sketches, allows a reflection on the continuous Aaltian search for the nature of new objects, and denotes his incessant effort to find a coherent internal structure. This research is materialized in the form of architecture with the construction of the Lapua Pavilionin 1938, to whose project, after this investigation, the authors decide to assign a sketch that could, erroneously, had been assigned to a different project at Alvar Aalto Foundation.

Light in August: Edward Weston contemplates the Lovell Beach House
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Parra-Martínez, José; Crosse, John; Olivares-López, Andrea
[EN] In 1927, Edward Weston, one of the most innovative and influential photographers of the 20th century, created a personal series of six pictures of Rudolph M. Schindler’s Lovell House in Newport Beach. Drawing upon archival evidence, this essay aims to complete the first studies that have contributed to establishing his authorship after decades of editorial oversight and historiographic disregard. Likewise, with the purpose of interpreting Weston’s intentions regarding this iconic California home, which was his only foray into the field of architectural photography, this paper provides a comparative analysis of the elements, techniques and environmental conditions common to all six pictures.

Drawing used as a tool for devising a new form of fortification during the Italian Renaissance: the example of two projects by Leonardo da Vinci
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Diez Oronoz, Aritz
[EN] The irruption of artillery marked the beginning of a rapid process to refound military architecture during the Renaissance. This need transcended the functional aspect to which fortification was traditionally associated, thus jeopardising the symbolic and representational connotations that medieval walls had hitherto represented in the collective imagination. Drawing, used as a medium to comprehend the new reality imposed by artillery, and as a tool to guide the thinking of the architects involved in this challenge, played an active role in refounding what is known today as the bastioned fortification. It laid the foundations for a new geometric and formal logic, discussed in this article. Two projects by Leonardo da Vinci, reconstructed by the author, serve as the basis for studying the geometric and formal basis on which this new idea of fortification was founded.

Construction process of the College of San Pablo in Granada. Analysis and dissemination through 3D modelling
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Vílchez Lara, María del Carmen; Gómez-Blanco Pontes, Antonio Jesús; Fernández Casas, José María
[EN] The aim of this article is to facilitate the understanding of the historical phases of the complex construction process at the College of San Pablo, initiated in 1556 and in progress to this day, through three-dimensional virtual reconstructions, obtained from two-dimensional graphichypotheses as well as from the laser scanner survey of the part corresponding to the old Jesuit schools, in order to preserve its original architectural configuration almost intact. It is a building of great relevance for the city of Granada, being known as Jesuit College, University, and Law School, which throughout its history has undergone different transformations. The methodology used to obtain the main phases of the historical-construction process has been based on the collection and analysis of primary and secondary sources. The realization of virtual reconstructions, using 3D modelling and subsequent rendering has proven to be an efficient instrument of conceptual recreation of the spaces and shapes of the architectural complex, due to its great utility in future interventions in the building in addition to its ability to disseminate among the scientific community.

Study and virtual reconstruction of the catafalque erected for the exequies of Marie Louise d’Orléans held at the Convent of the Encarnación in Madrid (1689)
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Revenga Domínguez, Paula; Cejas Rivas, David
[EN] In this article, we propose a 3D virtual representation of the catafalque erected in 1689 in the church of the Real Monasterio de la Encarnación in Madrid to celebrate the solemn exequies of Marie Louise d’Orléans. Information drawn from historical sources is used to describe the different phases to create the 3D model of this Baroque funeral ensemble. The potential of virtual resources for the reconstruction of a singular typology, ephemeral architecture, are highlighted.

Limitations in the digital survey of heritage assets with tower typology
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Molina Sánchez, Susana; Juan Vidal, Francisco; Cipriani, Luca; Denia Ríos, José Luis; Departamento de Expresión Gráfica Arquitectónica; Departamento de Ingeniería Cartográfica Geodesia y Fotogrametría; Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura; Instituto Universitario de Restauración del Patrimonio; Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de Caminos, Canales y Puertos
[EN] Digital terrestrial survey techniques such as photogrammetry (SfM) and 3D laser scanning have certain limitations. These depend on the tools used, geometry, lighting conditions and distance from the element which is being surveyed. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe a method for the correct digital survey of high elements (with tower typology) when working with such restrictions, as well as to verify the relevance of its usefulness. This methodology is applied to two bell towers located in Ravenna (Italy) allowing a series of tests and reasoning on geometric accuracy and quality of the texture obtained in final models.

Architectural space versus perspective space. The church of the Immaculate Conception in Huelma as an experimental work by Andrés de Vandelvira
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Estepa Rubio, Antonio; Estepa Rubio, Jesús; León Torres, Francisco Javier
[EN] The architectural space, compared to the space in painting, in addition to working with the rules of perspective, has to respond to technical and executive requirements linked to the process of implementation. There are many examples that we can point out from the study of the main sacred works of the south of the peninsula in the 16th century; although, within the contributions of Vandelvira, due to its experimental nature, it is worth mentioning the proposal for the church of Huelma, modifying the course of the works that had been started by Francisco del Castillo “el viejo”. For this reason, in this paper, we will review the geometric, spatial, technical and constructive concepts that, from an abstract point of view, could be found in this work for a better understanding of the thinking of these great masters, where Vandelvira has a prominent place.

Formal investigations into the caliphal architecture of Córdoba based on an enigmatic drawing from 1727
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) García Ortega, Antonio Jesús
[EN] The Andalusian caliphate forms continue to fascinate us to this day. We marvel at the complexity of certain forms and wonder about the sources that inspired them. The need to interpret the late drawing of a mosque converted into a church in Córdoba has prompted us to examine this subject in greater detail. The building would appear to belong to the rare “nine vault” typology, although it has yet to be dated. In this paper we analyse the origin, use and chronology of significant architectural organisations drawn on the plan. Some of them have obvious analogies with the ones used in the enlargement of the great mosque in Córdoba undertaken by the Umayyad caliph al-Hakam II, while others evidence the arrival and creative adaptation of forms used in ancient Ifr qiya.

Ingres at the Campidoglio: an alternative vision of a public space
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Pérez Igualada, Javier
[EN] In this article we analyze the particular view of the urban landscape proposed by Ingres in his drawing L’Escalier de Santa Maria in Aracoeli, comparing it with the one that results from accepting as a predetermined point of view the one that Michelangelo proposes in its symmetrical composition for the Piazza del Campidoglio. The different ways in which the Campidoglio complex has been graphically represented, both in reference books on urban morphology and in old engravings, are examined and through frame and perspective we trace the background of the alternative look by Ingres. Finally, the analysis of the drawing of the stairway of Santa Maria in Aracoeli is integrated in an interpretation of the urban landscapes drawn by Ingres during his stay in Rome, identifying the distinctively modern features that we can find in his representation of the city.

In conversation with… Alberto Campo Baeza
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-07-16) Solaguren-Beascoa de Corral, Félix
[EN] I think it would be redundant to introduce Professor Alberto Campo Baeza. His CV is known enough to review it one more time. He has also given multiple interviews where many times questions and aspects regarding his work and his person are repeated. For this reason, when Angela García, Editor of EGA, asked me to interview him, I spoke with Alberto and suggested that he carry out a kind of dialogue on topics that I knew were of interest to him. He never says no for an answer due to his great generosity.I will start by explaining that I met Alberto around 1990 when he was going down the stairs of the ETSAB. I believe that he was in a court for competitive examinations and I approached him on a break from the test. At that time he was already well known as a teacher and as an architect. Over the years we have met punctually at events and conferences, a relationship that has intensified over time. The scene was always more or less the same, but with subtle and intense moments that certainly fill me with admiration: he speaking of light and space, of poetry (let’s not forget that his passion for the classics is manifest and well known), that materializes with clear and simple projects where nothing is superfluous and where nothing is missing, explaining them with infinite patience and an emotion that he always transmits to the attendees. Can you ask for more? Oblivious to fashion, but always attentive to any intellectual concern. Very young Full Professor. Currently Emeritus of the ETSAM, member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and so much more ...But there are two facts that have special meaning for me. The first, his attempt to work with Arne Jacobsen just before his death. The second, while being the director of the School, when he was a visiting professor at the ETSAB leading a 5th year Project Workshop during the first semester of the 2018-2019 period. He did not miss any lesson. He came from Madrid every week. A gift. These aspects are implicit in the text that we share below. Made, as Alberto says, “cup by cup”, at a time invaded by the pandemic and in a come and go of emails. Questions and answers, checks, every two or three days I received news from him. We were exchanging questions and answers in both directions in an enriching dialogue that has been another particular lesson that he has given me.I can only be grateful for this possibility, that of an “atypical interview”, as Ángela García describes it, and which has been delayed in time until we came to find this formula that thanks to technology we could carry out.Thank you very much Alberto.
