dc.description.abstract [EN] In European countries, animal protection laws are enacted by national governments. However, there are specific initiatives developed by supranational institutions, such as the Council of Europe and the European Union, which dictate the minimum requirements that have to be fulfilled. This paper aims to update and clarify the legal aspects regarding animal welfare affecting small ruminants in Spain. To do so, a chronological review of the existing legislation has been made, focusing specially, on the management practices that have a direct impact at the farm level such as dehorning, castration, tail-docking and identification.
