Turias Line : Habitat-Art

Abstract

El conjunto del proyecto trata de una intervención urbana en la manzana U-22 del barrio del Carmen de Valencia, así como en la parcela de la medianera trasera del IVAM. El emplazamiento propuesto es particular y privilegiado ya que da frente al cauce del jardín del río Turia y permite la relación de la ciudad con este.

Actualmente el barrio del Carmen acoge una gran diversidad de habitantes y usuarios que ha dado lugar a un movimiento social activo continuo, el cual se muestra con manifestaciones de arte urbano y actividades culturales en diversas parcelas, muros y calles del centro histórico. Se trata de un barrio lleno de inquietudes e ideas para mejorar la ciudad y la relación de las personas en el espacio público.

Después del análisis urbanístico del barrio, se consideran diversas problemáticas. La densidad de población es baja con respecto a otros barrios; el espacio público (plazas y parques) es escaso, ya que el tramo del río más cercano contiene infraestructuras de uso privatizado; los pequeños comercios en cota de calle tienen baja actividad; y, sobre todo, se niega la relación con el río debido a la circulación rodada de la Avenida Guillem de Castro que separa el cauce del centro histórico.

Analizadas las necesidades y la vida del barrio, este proyecto responde ofreciendo vivienda, espacio público, pequeños comercios, dotaciones, y una relación más directa con el río a través de unas plataformas que se adentran en el mismo.

Habit-art es un edificio multifuncional, formado por distintos bloques incrustados entre dos bandas longitudinales (forjado primero y cubierta) que recorren todo el proyecto, desde la fachada del río hasta la trasera del IVAM. Los bloques se disponen teniendo en cuenta las líneas de parcela de las antiguas fábricas que ocupaban la manzana, y además forman ángulos intencionados que dan lugar a unas visuales concretas de hitos (chimenea, torre, IVAM). Los bloques albergan distintos usos: viviendas para artistas, espacios públicos de creación y ocio, y una serie de niveles intermedios que permiten las relaciones entre vecinos así como la conexión de las distintas cotas del edificio.

Los recorridos creados a través de las bandas principales pretenden trasladar el modo de vivir y circular por una calle del barrio a la propia edificación. Este concepto se traslada también a la cubierta, convirtiéndose esta en un espacio transitable de acceso público con visuales directas al río. Además de formar parte del recorrido que une el barrio con el cauce, la cubierta dispone de espacios verdes y huertos urbanos que hacen referencia al uso histórico de la parcela como zona de huerta.

Este proyecto consigue reflejar la historia del barrio y de la manzana, y al mismo tiempo responder a las necesidades y usuarios más actuales. Se recuperan los espacios de relación vecinal, tan propios e identitarios de los barrios tradicionales, dentro de un concepto de edificio y espacio público innovador.

The whole project is an urban intervention in the Carmen district in Valencia, block U-22, as well as in the plot of the middling back of the IVAM. The proposed site is particular and privileged because it is placed in front of the bed of the Turia River and it allows the connection of the city with this garden.

Currently the Carmen district hosts a great diversity of inhabitants and users which has resulted in a continuous active social movement, which is shown with manifestations of urban art and cultural activities in various plots, walls and streets of the historic centre. It's a district full of concerns and ideas to improve the city and the relationship of people in public space.

After the urban analysis of the district, are considered different issues. The population density is low relative to other districts; public space (squares and parks) is limited, due to the section of the nearest river which contains privatized infrastructures; small shops at street level have low activity; and, over all, the relation with the river is refused due to traffic circulation of Guillem de Castro Avenue that separates the river garden of the historic centre.

Analysed needs and life in the district, this project responds with providing housing, public space, small shops, endowments, and a more directly relation with the River through some platforms that penetrate over the garden.

Habit-art is a multifunctional building, made up of different blocks embedded between two longitudinal bands (first floor and cover) that run through the entire project, from the limit of the river up to the middling back of the IVAM. The blocks are placed in line with the traces in the plot of the old factories and they also form intentional angles that give rise to a concrete visual milestones (chimney, tower, IVAM). The blocks are home to different uses: housing for artists, public spaces of creation and leisure activities, and a number of intermediate levels that allow the relationships between neighbors as well as the connection of the different tiers of the building.

Tours created through the main bands are intended to move the mode of living and circulate through a street in the neighborhood to the building itself. This concept is also transferred to the cover, turning it into a walkable space for public access with visuals to the river. In addition to being part of the route which links the district with the river bed, the cover has green spaces and urban gardens that make reference to the historical use of the plot as a garden area.

This project manages to reflect the history of the district and the block, and at the same time it responds to the needs and current users. Recuperated the spaces of neighbor relationship, which are typical and identitary of the traditional districts, using an innovative concept of building and public space.
