The two species studied are exclusive endemisms of great value in the Valencian salt marshes. Limonium albuferae Ferrer et al. it is located only in the Natural Park of l'Albufera. Limonium dufourii (Girard) O. Kuntze is another exclusive Valencian endemism, present in the provinces of Valencia and Castellón. Both species are cataloged in the IUCN category "Critically endangered".
The salt marshes represent ecosystems that are especially sensitive to the effects of climate change, which can cause an increase in soil salinity, which can affect the biodiversity of the halophyte vegetation, even causing the disappearance of some species in specific areas. For this reason, knowledge of salinity tolerance levels of taxa of interest has a practical importance in the management of salt marshes. The response to salt stress has not been studied in either species.
This study is carried out in collaboration with the "Banc de Llavors forestals CIEF (Valencia), who provides the seed material.
To check the germination capacity of the seeds under salinity conditions, germination tests are carried out under controlled conditions in germination chambers in aqueous solutions of NACl with a range between 0 and 600mM. Germination tests are carried out for 30 days. At the end of this period all non-germinated seeds are transferred to new petri dishes, in the absence of salt, to check their recovery capacity.
The seedlings obtained by germination of the seeds in the control treatments will be transplanted in pots with a standard substrate (peat and vermiculite 1: 1) under greenhouse conditions. Once the seedlings acquire a sufficient size and are developed at least until the appearance of the first true leaves, they will undergo saline stress treatments (irrigation with increasing concentrations of NaCl, in the same range as that used for germination.
At the end of a period of one or two months, when the effect of salinity becomes noticeable, the plant material is sampled. In the plant material sampled at the beginning (time 0) and at the end of the treatments it will be determined: fresh and dry weight of leaves, roots and stems (or of roots and aerial part of the plants), length of the roots and length of the stems, number of leaves and content of photosynthetic pigments.
The data obtained is analysed statistically using the SPSS program.
