Entrepreneurship, immigrants and rural communities: The case of Spain

Abstract

[EN] Many rural areas have experienced development downturn throughout most of the 20th century. Usually, immigrants have been considered as labour force. However, they often choose to become entrepreneurs. Relevant literature suggests evidences that immigrants are more entrepreneurially active than local inhabitants. The objective of this study is to verify how local conditions in rural areas as well as characteristics of immigrants influence individuals to become entrepreneurs. The results indicate that an immigrant has a higher likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur. Residing in a rural community positively influences the likeliness of being involved in entrepreneurial activities; however this is mainly true for Spaniards, since immigrants are not influenced by rurality.

[ES] Durante el siglo XX, las áreas rurales han experimentado procesos que han afectado negativamente su desarrollo. Usualmente, los inmigrantes extranjeros han sido estudiados como trabajadores. Sin embargo, de acuerdo con la literatura, pueden llegar a ser más emprendedores que los habitantes locales. Este estudio tiene como objeto determinar cómo influye en un individuo la condición de ser inmigrante y el hecho de vivir en un municipio rural para llegar a ser un emprendedor. Los resultados indican que un individuo que es inmigrante tiene mayor probabilidad de convertirse en emprendedor. Vivir en un municipio rural también afecta positivamente a la probabilidad de emprendimiento individual, pero esto sólo es verdadero para los españoles, porque sobre los inmigrantes el factor rural no tiene influencia.
