[EN] In this project, the aim is to evaluate the OPTSIM simulation tool of the RSOFT company over fiber communications systems based on coherent modulations. These modulations, relatively modern in the context of optical communications, represent the present and future for long distance and high capacity systems, as well as high-performance access networks that facilitate the deployment of 5G.
The coherent modulations present some peculiarities with respect to the old intensity modulations such as the need for the control of the optical phase, the frequency stability and the light polarization control those have been resolved by digital processing and MIMO techniques in the optical coherent receivers. They also allow the digital compensation of the chromatic dispersion, the polarization mode dispersion and even the nonlinear mechanisms generated in the fiber.
All this new paradigm has meant a very abrupt evolution in the simulation tools. This project aims to quantify and evaluate their benefits and fundamental limitations.
