The development of a website application which sorts Twitter's information as a newspaper

Abstract

Twitter has modified the way that users get the breaking news around the world. The communication power has switched from big companies that own the media to anonymous people with a tool in their hands. The result is huge information source that it can be used for skip the filter that the big media companies use to select news. This project tries to take advantage of the situation in order to develop a tool that shows the messages sent on Twitter related with breaking news. To achieve the project, a survey has been created, to research the Twitter's users vision of the topic, and based on the survey's result a requirements design has been developed trying to fit the market necessities regarding the topic. The survey showed that people get the breaking news on Twitter, and if it is related to them, Twitter's users spread the information. This result gives to the project a realistic situation where it can be a success. The research about the correct approach for the project has shown two possible options. The first option has been developing an application that scans Twitter information, selects messages regarding breaking news and stores in the database in order to show the information to final users. The second option has been developing an application that users use to publish breaking news. The research have also shown that the first option it is not available due to the different languages that people use and the way that people write, being necessary for this approach a tool that processes different languages and styles and gives as a result, a filtered list of messages. Furthermore, it has been selected the second approach for developing the project. A research has been made in order to investigate, compare and choose the correct methodology and technology to fit the project.
