The Transformation of the "Black Box"

Abstract

The idea of this project is to convert an old office building downtown into an energy-neutral high-rise village. The assignment contained the office building located in the city centre of Groningen at Eendrachtskade 2, commonly called the "Black Box". It was built in 1976, and the actual technical condition is poor with inadequate insulation. When the building remains empty in 2014, the most obvious next thing to happen is the demolition. But, due to climate impact, the objective is to reuse the building by adding new functions and giving it a purpose again. Within this renewed construction multiple types of dwellings will be made for seniors, families and students. Orientated from north to south, the dwellings catch maximum daylight saving energy and even have the possibility to ventilate on a natural way. The whole volume is covered in a second glass skin, which roof has a slope of 35° facing south, so the solar panels can be placed on the perfect position. In addition the heat inside the glass facade in collected and stored under the ground, the remaining heat will be generated through heat pomp. It is time for energy neutral living. / La idea de este proyecto es convertir un antiguo edificio de oficinas en un edificio energéticamente neutro. El inmueble está situado en el centro de la ciudad de Groningen, en la calle Eendrachtskade 2, y comúnmente es llamado la "Caja Negra". Fue construido en 1976 y su actual condición técnica es insuficiente, con un aislamiento inadecuado. En 2014 el edificio quedará vacío y lo más probable es que se proceda a su demolición. Pero, debido al impacto medioambiental, el objetivo es remodelar el edificio añadiendo nuevas funciones y dándole un nuevo propósito. En esta renovada construcción se planean viviendas para albergar a mayores, familias y estudiantes. Orientado de norte a sur, las viviendas captan la máxima luz durante el día, ahorrando energía e incluso teniendo la posibilidad de ventilarse de forma natural. El edificio entero está cubierto por una fachada de muro cortina, cuyo techo tiene una pendiente de 35º orientada al sur, que acoge paneles solares en la posición perfecta. Además el calor que se genera es acumulado y almacenado en tierra y será reutilizado a través de una bomba. Con todo ello, llega el momento de una vida energéticamente neutra.
