"Muerte del teniente Rochera en Vich". Análisis formal, estudio técnico e intervención de un lienzo de gran formato militar de 1897 del pintor catalán José Cusachs

Abstract

[ES] El presente Trabajo Final de Master tiene como objeto de estudio e investigación tanto histórico, técnico como analítico, una pintura sobre lienzo de gran formato de temática militar, obra del pintor catalán José Cusachs realizada en 1897, procedente del antiguo convento de Predicadores de Valencia, actual sede de Capitanía General y que en un futuro inmediato entraría a formar parte de una Sala del Museo Histórico Militar de Valencia. La obra Muerte del Teniente Rochera en Vich, representa una escena de la Guerra Carlista en la ciudad de Vic (capital de la comarca de Osona, Barcelona), muestra en un primer plano al teniente exánime tendido en el suelo con un disparo en la frente, sujetado por un soldado y un sargento armado de pie. Hallando en planos secundarios objetos de artillería, caballería y otros soldados, y un paisaje arquitectónico y ruinoso de Vic. El hecho representado en la obra ocurrió la noche del 9 de enero de 1874 al asaltar los carlistas la ciudad de Vic. El Teniente Juan Bautista Rochera y Mingarro (1848-1874) nacido en Burriana, encontró la muerte con un disparo después de agotar todo el armamento y defender heroicamente su posición y la ciudad, sobreviviendo de su Unidad un oficial y 28 individuos de tropa con tres caballos únicamente. En su casa natal situada en Burriana (Castellón) figura una lápida con una inscripción que conmemora su heroica muerte. La pintura aparece firmada en la esquina inferior izquierda donde se puede leer: ¿J.Cusachs 1897¿, El pintor Josep Cusachs i Cusachs (1851-1908) nació en Montpellier (Francia) pasando la mayor parte de su vida en Barcelona, donde murió. En 1865 ingresa en la Academia Militar de Artillería de Segovia, se convierte en Capitán y lucha en la Tercera Guerra Carlista. Finalmente renunció a su carrera en el ejército para dedicarse a la pintura formándose en París en el estudio de Eduardo Detaille, especializando su producción en temática militar. La obra presenta un relativo estado de conservación, si bien son constatables algunos procesos actuales de restauración llevados a cabo sobre la pintura al menos en dos momentos diferentes y por distintas manos. Los procesos de restauración y conservación de la obra se han llevado a término en el Instituto Universitario de Conservación y Restauración del Patrimonio de la Universitat Politècnica de València, basándose en la eliminación de la capa de barniz oxidado del estrato pictórico y en el mantenimiento y adecuación del marco dorado.

In the background we find objects of artillery, cavalry and other soldiers, and an architectural and ruinous landscape of Vic. The event represented in the work occurred on the night of January 9, 1874 when the Carlists assaulted the city of Vic. He finally gave up his career in the army to devote himself to painting and trained in Paris in the studio of Eduardo Detaille, specializing his production in military subjects. The work is in a relative state of preservation, although some current restoration processes carried out on the painting at least at two different times and by different hands are verifiable. The restoration and conservation processes of the work have been carried out at the Heritage Restoration Institute of the Universitat Politècnica de València, this process has focused on the conservation of the golden frame and the elimination of the rusted varnish.
