La devoció d'una imatge front als valors artístics. Sant Llorenç de Vilallonga

Abstract

[EN] The main objective of this work is to demonstrate that an image does not necessary have to be made with wood, as over the years it has been employed various materials for the creation of images representing christian culture as well as customs. Some materials employed as definitive for the creation of an art work are: mud, stone, clay and even plaster. For this reason, any image that has not been elaborated from wood can have the same value and devotion. The image that we have studied, “Sant Llorenç”, is an image elaborated in 20th century by the company “Arte Cristiano”, at Olot (Girona, Spain). After several studies and investigations, the art work can be dated to approximately in the early 30s. However, it may be that the work was already done and stored 10 years before this, since at that time Spain was undergoing a period of decline due to the Civil War, and given that this image is well elaborated appears to be unlikely that it was created during this time of decline. Therefore, we can hypothesise that the work was possibly made few years before it was ordered. In addition, the quality of the image, the original polychrome, the treatment of engravings and engraved suggests that it was prepared by a magnificent sculptor. Hence it is highly unlikely that during the Civil War they would have dedicated so much of time for the creation of an image, as the majority of towns lost many art works in that decade. Consequently, “Arte Cristiano” received many orders, because people needed to replace the saint that they had lost by one of the same image. It is known that before the existence of this image, there was already a picture of this Saint years ago at Villalonga town, although neither do we know the exact material used nor the antiquity of the work. What it is known is that the image of “Sant Llorenç” was destroyed during the Civil War and was probably rescued from the old chapel of “Buixerques” neighbourhood. It is for this that we can hypothesise that this image was bought, as in this way could substitute the previous one. This is a piece made with a material termed “cartoon-wood”, a receipt from the company “Arte Cristiano” and patented soon after opening the workshop. The image is presented upright, and carries with it two attributes from its martyrdom, such as palm and grills. Given that after his martyrdom was named Saint, it also carries an aura with laurel leaves as a symbol of triumph, victory of his martyrdom.

[CA] L’objectiu principal és demostrar que una imatge no te per què estar elaborada necessàriament amb fusta, ja que al llarg dels anys s’han utilitzat varis materials per a la creació d’imatges tant cristianes com costumistes. Alguns materials utilitzats com a definitius per a l’elaboració d’una obra són: el fang, la pedra, l’argila i inclús l’escaiola. És per aquest motiu, que qualsevol imatge que no s’hagi elaborat amb fusta, pot tindre el mateix valor i devoció. La imatge que estudiem, “Sant Llorenç”, és una imatge realitzada en el S.XX, per l’empresa “Arte Cristiano”,a Olot (Girona).

Després de diversos estudis i investigacions realitzades, podem datar l’obra aproximadament en la dècada dels anys 30, encara que pogués ser que l’obra estigués ja feta i guardada en el magatzem 10 anys abans, ja que per aquells temps, (la Guerra Civil) Espanya corria un període de decadència i aquesta imatge està massa ben elaborada poder pensar que estigués elaborada durant aquest temps de decadència. És per açò que hipotèticament parlant, podem dir que l’obra estigués possiblement elaborada uns anys abans de què fóra encomanada .Per la qualitat de la imatge, la policromia original, el tractament dels esgrafiats i del burinat, ens diu que ha estat elaborada per un escultor que realitzava molt bé la seva feina, i no crec que precisament durant la Guerra Civil dedicaren tant de temps per a l’elaboració d’una imatge, ja que la majoria dels municipis perderen moltes obres d’art en aquella dècada i “Arte Cristiano” rebia moltíssimes comandes, perquè la gent necessitava ocupar el lloc del Sant que havien perdut, per un nou de la mateixa imatge.

I açò és el que va ocórrer en aquesta xicoteta població de la Safor, Villalonga.

Sabent que abans de l’existència d’aquesta imatge, al poble de Vilallonga ja hi havia anys enrere una imatge d’aquest mateix Sant (no sabem exactament de quin material estava feta ni tan sols l’antiguitat de l’obra), el que sabem és que la imatge de Sant Llorenç fou destruïda durant la Guerra Civil i que possiblement fou rescatada de l’antiga capella del barri de Buixerques, és per açò, que hipotèticament parlant, podem dir que aquesta imatge fou comprada perquè d’aquesta forma substituïa l’anterior.

Es tracta d’una peça realitzada amb un material nomenat “cartó- fusta”, és una recepta pròpia de l’empresa “Arte Cristiano”, i patentada al poc de temps de l’obertura del taller.

La imatge es presenta dempeus, i porta amb ella dos atributs propis del seu martiri, com són la palma i les graelles. Com després del seu martiri va ser nomenat Sant, també porta una aurèola amb fulles de llorer, com a símbol de triomf, de victòria front al seu martiri.
