[EN] Seismic codes contemplate the use of some seismic design methods whose respective theoretical concepts not usually vary from standard to another. However, we can find variations in how to apply them what suppose differences in the final design of a building for a same method. In Spain, the future adoption of the European rules EC8 replacing the NCSE-02 raises questions that cannot be ignored, especially regarding the impact that those differences might have on the final cost of a project. In this research we have studied this issue for a specific case.
We have designed a 15 storey reinforced concrete planar frame with two seismic design methods usually employed in a design office (response spectrum method and equivalent static analysis). The design is performed with the NCSE-02 and the EC8 for one ground acceleration and four levels of ductility. The results have allowed us to analyse the economic impact due to the change of codes and the influence of the seismic design method and the degree of ductility considered.
We dealt also the seismic design methods in a historical and theoretical perspective.
