[EN] The thesis deals with the analysis of thermal behavior of encapsulated phase change materials (PCM) for latent thermal energy storage system (LTESS).
More in detail, three commercial phase change paraffins (RT 35 HC, RT 42 and RT 50), having a different range of melting temperature (from 35°C to 50°C), are monitored during the charging as well as discharging phases in a thermal storage filled with distilled water. PCMs are encapsulated in aluminum boxes with and without the presence of aluminum and copper metal foams. An experimental test rig is used in which a thermostatic bath with a total volume of 22.8 liters is filled with water and encapsulated PCM. The volume of the PCM is around 20% of the total volume of the thermostatic bath. The thermostatic bath is equipped with an electrical resistance by means of which the whole volume is heat up to a fixed setpoint temperature value (i.e. 50°C); in this way the storage is charged of thermal energy. The temperature of water and PCM is monitored by means of a series of thermocouples. When both water and PCM reach the setpoint, the electrical resistance is switched off and the charging phase is stopped. A constant volumetric flow rate of water is extracted by the bath thanks to a pump. The hot water enters in a fancoil used to transfer to the ambient air the heat of the water. In order to stabilize the return temperature to the thermostatic bath used as storage, and additional cold bath is used. The experimental results highlight the effect of the metal foam on the heat transfer within the paraffin, by reducing the melting time and accelerating the heat transfer between PCM and water. The value of the overall heat transfer coefficient between the encapsulated PCM and water is obtained by the experimental data.
In the end is evident the benefit in using PCM within metal foams in terms of discharging time of the system. Indeed with foams the disharging time is about 1 hour, meanwhile with pure PCM is about 6 hour.
Furthermore the heat transfert coefficent, of PCM within metal foams, is greater than the case with pure PCM. ( aggiungree i valori medi dei risutlati ottenuti)
From the experimental results there is no significant difference between the copper or aluminum foams in tearms of heat transfer coefficent and disharging time.
