[EN] This Master's Thesis aims to analyze a centrifugal pump designed to be used as a ventricular assist device (VAD) in the treatment of heart failure. The study focuses on understanding and analyzing the hemodynamic performance of the device and medical aspects such as blood damage. To achieve this, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of blood flow through the pump will be conducted to capture and study the physical phenomena that occur within it.
In the studies, the simulations will be pseudo-steady-state and will be performed using the Star-CCM+ software by SIEMENS, with an overset mesh configuration and simulating the rotation of the rotor using a moving reference frame. Additionally, a transient simulation will be conducted to compare the results with those obtained from steady-state simulations. Mesh independence studies, variation of rotational speed, flow rate, and vertical position of the rotor will be carried out, and the accuracy of the results will be validated by comparing them with existing literature. Through these analyses, the operating maps of the centrifugal pump will be obtained, as well as performance, velocity fields, stress distributions, pressure distributions, and hemolysis index for different rotor positions.
