Análisis de la percepción social de la biotecnología

Abstract

[ES] Decía el astrónomo y divulgador científico Carl Sagan que «Vivimos en una sociedad profundamente dependiente de la ciencia y la tecnología en la que nadie sabe nada de estos temas. Esto constituye una fórmula segura para el desastre». En el presente proyecto, se ha investigado si esta frase, formulada hace más de tres décadas, puede aplicarse a la biotecnología en la actualidad. Para ello se ha realizado un trabajo de investigación sobre el estado del conocimiento de biotecnología en el público en general y la necesidad de incrementar o mejorar las estrategias de divulgación en esta disciplina científica. Diversos indicadores señalan que vivimos en una época donde los avances científico-tecnológicos avanzan más rápido que el pensamiento social, de ahí la necesidad de una divulgación eficiente. En este trabajo nos centramos en el campo de la biotecnología. En la actualidad, no existen gran cantidad de estudios centrados en la divulgación de esta disciplina científica, posiblemente porque la implantación del grado de Biotecnología en España es muy reciente (menos de 15 años). Algunas preguntas básicas que hemos respondido en este proyecto son: ¿El público en general sabe lo que es la biotecnología? ¿Conoce cómo influye en su vida? ¿Sabe qué aplicaciones está utilizando que se basan en la biotecnología?

Mediante encuestas a diferentes sectores de la población se ha evaluado el conocimiento de la población en general sobre la biotecnología, sus aplicaciones y los beneficios que esta reporta a la sociedad. A su vez, se ha consultado a la población acerca de cuáles son sus preferencias en varios aspectos relativos al consumo de divulgación científica, y si esta está siendo efectiva. Los resultados obtenidos nos han mostrado que la biotecnología no está siendo comunicada de forma efectiva a la sociedad. En base a dichos resultados, se han propuesto novedosas estrategias de mejora en vista a un mayor acercamiento de la biotecnología a la sociedad. De manera que este trabajo se relaciona con los siguientes ODS de la Agenda 2030: 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 14 y 15.

[EN] Astronomer and science communicator Carl Sagan said that «We live in a society deeply dependent on science and technology in which nobody knows anything about these subjects. This is a sure recipe for disaster». In the present project, we have investigated whether this statement, made more than three decades ago, can be applied to biotechnology today. To this end, research has been carried out on the state of knowledge of biotechnology in the public and the need to increase or improve the dissemination strategies in this scientific discipline. Various indicators indicate that we live in an era in which scientific and technological advances are advancing faster than social thought, hence the need for efficient dissemination. In this paper we focus on the field of biotechnology. At present, there are not many studies focused on the dissemination of this scientific discipline, possibly because the implementation of the Biotechnology degree in Spain is very recent (less than 15 years). Some basic questions that we have answered in this project are: Does the public know what biotechnology is? Do they know how it influences their lives? Do they know what applications they are using that are based on biotechnology?

Surveys of different sectors of the population have been used to assess the general public's knowledge of biotechnology, its applications, and the benefits it brings to society. At the same time, the population has been consulted about their preferences in various aspects related to the consumption of scientific information, and whether it is being effective. The results obtained have shown that biotechnology is not being communicated effectively to society. Based on these results, novel strategies for improvement have been proposed to bring biotechnology closer to society. Thus, this work is related to the following SDGs of the 2030 Agenda: 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 14 and 15.
