[EN] Nowadays, pollution of the aquatic environment is one of the biggest environmental problems in the world. The seas and oceans have become the main dumping ground for plastics, the most representative of which are microplastics. These directly and negatively affect the aquatic environment and the living creatures that inhabit it.
The majority of microplastics are textile microfibers. These can be created by the simple friction of the clothes against each other inside the washing machine drum where, after the washing process is completed, they pass through the washing machine's filter. Conventional filters in domestic washing machines are not able to trap these microfibers, because the filter pore size of their designs is too large to retain them.
In the present project FiberClean has been designed, a textile structure adaptable to the conventional filter of domestic washing machines, which is able to reduce the presence of microfibers in the wastewater from the washing process. FiberClean is composed of a non-woven structure and a nanofibrous layer, by means of which a nanometric filtering porosity is achieved, which is expected to be able to retain the microfibers in their totality.
