Failure analysis in aviation on an aeronautical component

Abstract

Failure analysis is of great importance in aviation because it leads to failure prevention, which can avoid both economical and human losses. A standard procedure is outlined in the project. However, it is just an example and it can be subject to changes depending on the failure analyst’s criteria. With regard to the aviation component, a TBC was chosen. To start with, a theoretical introduction involving composition, processing, degradation and failure is given. Then, the lab results involving the degradation of a TBC after exposing it to two types volcanic ash at high temperatures are given. The results conclude that at high temperatures there is penetration, that one of the ashes is more aggressive than the other, that anorthite was made and arrested further penetration and that failure was due to delamination.
