Los ciclos de la naturaleza y su efecto en el patrimonio edificado del Caribe

[EN] Between 2020 and 2021, the world was paralyzed due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Concurrently, the devastating effects of Greenhouse Gases, the cause of the drastic Climate Change that threatens us, were considerably reduced. Nature had a well-deserved respite when we were locked-up and immobile, and the architectural heritage was protected by stabilizing the drastic changes in the climate. Are we the protagonists of the devastation of the planet and consequently, of the destruction of our architectural heritage? The intervention processes for existing structures must respond, in a compatible way, to their particular building technologies and their geographical location. If the only “green” building is that which already exists, the recycling of its components and recovery are sustainable techniques that our ancestors used as a conscious process to protect, and not waste, the natural resources of our planet earth necessary for their survival.

[ES] Entre los años 2020 y 2021, el mundo se paralizó debido a la pandemia del COVID-19. Durante este periodo, se redujeron considerablemente los efectos devastadores de los gases de efecto invernadero, causantes del cambio climático que acecha. La naturaleza tuvo un merecido respiro, y el patrimonio arquitectónico se vio menos castigado al estabilizarse los cambios drásticos del clima. ¿Somos a nivel global responsables de la devastación del planeta y, como consecuencia, de la destrucción de nuestra arquitectura patrimonial? Los procesos de intervención en estas estructuras existentes deben responder, de manera compatible, a sus tecnologías edilicias particulares y su ubicación geográfica. Si el único edificio sostenible es el que ya existe, la recuperación y el reciclaje de sus componentes cobran sentido, pues emplean técnicas sostenibles que utilizaban nuestros antepasados como procesos conscientes para proteger, y no desperdiciar, los recursos naturales de nuestro planeta Tierra, necesarios para su supervivencia.
