The persistence of the floor plan model of the mission church conceived by Juan Maria Salvatierra in Lower California

Abstract

[ES] Esta investigación analiza la persistencia del modelo arquitectónico introducido por Juan María Salvatierra a comienzos del siglo xviii en la misión de Loreto, considerada el núcleo del primer programa constructivo estable en la Baja California. El enfoque metrológico basado en la reconstrucción planimétrica y en el uso de una cuadrícula de referencia en pies romanos constituye una aportación innovadora al estudio de la arquitectura misional, al poner de relieve la coherencia dimensional de las iglesias jesuíticas de nave única mejor conservadas de la región. Los resultados sugieren que la primera iglesia de adobe erigida por Salvatierra sirvió como arquetipo, debido a su fuerte valor simbólico asociado a la figura del fundador de las misiones californianas. Asimismo, se plantea la hipótesis de que una de las capillas laterales de la actual iglesia del siglo xviii podría reproducir la Santa Casa, quizás edificada por el propio Salvatierra, reforzando así el carácter devocional e identitario de todo el conjunto.

[EN] This research investigates the persistence of the architectural model introduced by Juan María Salvatierra in the early eighteenth century at the mission of Loreto, regarded as the nucleus of the f irst stable building program in Lower California. The metrological approach based on planimetric reconstruction and the use of a reference grid in Roman feet represents an innovative contribution to the analysis of mission architecture, highlighting the dimensional coherence of the bestpreserved singlenave Jesuit churches in the region. The findings suggest that the first adobe church erected by Salvatierra served as an archetype, owing to its strong symbolic value associated with the figure of the founder of the Californian missions. Furthermore, it is hypothesized that one of the side chapels of the present eighteenthcentury church may reproduce the Holy House, perhaps built by Salvatierra himself, thereby reinforcing the devotional and identityrelated character of the entire complex.
