Comparative analysis of workplace safety statistics of the Kingdom of Spain and the United States of America, and their relation to workplace health and safety regulations

Abstract

[EN] The Western world shares a culture that actively influences the lives of the people who inhabit it. Though diverse, common threads of ancestry lead these people to many of the same decisions, and mistakes. These mistakes cost us our time, our health, and sometimes our lives. It is no surprise, therefore, that we developed ways to minimize these issues, methods for Workplace Health and Safety. These methods, in the form of guidelines or laws, strive to foster safe and healthy work environments. However, if we were to examine statistics of workplace injury, we would find that the results are less than consistent. Though all nations try to protect their workers, some are more successful than others. It is from comparison that we may learn.

The United States of America are an old friend and enemy of Spain, a much younger country, much larger, and much stranger. Free from the colonial yoke, it has developed into a superpower that embodies the Western way of life, and sets itself as a reference for the Old Continent. It is here we will find a subject both similar and different, against whom we can take our measure.

Our objective is as follows, to examine the results of the United States of America¿s safety guidelines, locate the relevant documentation, and compare it to our own to learn where we can better ourselves. With consideration to the size of the task, we will concentrate on the three main aspects of industry: Extraction, Construction, and Manufacture.

[ES] Los países occidentales comparten una cultura que activamente influencia las vidas de las personas que los habita. Aunque diversos, hilos genealógicos comunes llevan estas gentes a tomar muchas decisiones, y cometer muchos errores, de la misma manera. Estos errores nos cuestan nuestro tiempo, nuestra salud, y a veces nuestras vidas. No es sorprendente, por lo tanto, que hayamos desarrollado formas de minimizar estas incidencias, métodos de Seguridad y Salud Laboral. Estos métodos, en forma de guías o leyes, se esfuerzan por fomentar un entorno laboral sano y seguro. Sin embargo, si examináramos las estadísticas de accidentes laborales, encontraríamos que los resultados son menos que consistentes. Aunque todas las naciones intentan proteger a sus trabajadores, algunos son más exitosos que otros. Es a través de esta comparación que tenemos la posibilidad de aprender.

Los Estados Unidos de América son un viejo amigo y enemigo de España, un país mucho más joven, mucho más grande, y mucho más extraño. Libres del yugo colonial, se ha convertido en una súper potencia que personifica el modo occidental de vida, y se sitúa como una referencia para el Viejo Continente. Es aquí donde encontraremos un sujeto a la par similar y diferente, contra el cual podremos tomar nuestra medida. Nuestro objetivo es el siguiente, examinar los resultados de las directrices de seguridad de los Estados Unidos de América, localizar los documentos relevantes, y compararlos con los nuestros para aprender cómo podemos mejorarnos. Teniendo en consideración la escala de la tarea, nos concentraremos en los tres aspectos fundamentales de la industria: Extracción, Construcción, y Fabricación.
