Museo Madinat al Zahra en Córdoba

[EN] There is architecture that owes itself to a metaphor: it agrees with a concept that if not explained literally, makes it easier to under-stand. This is what happens with the Museum and Institutional Head-quarters in Medina Azahara (1998-2008) by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano. Already in the memorandum of competition, the architects proposed the metaphor of the archaeological excavation: they are not inspired to construct a building but to discover it, with luck, under-ground. Like the palace-city ruin, their project wants to be a discov-ery: they are not trying to build it; they are on the way to encounter it, interpreting the traces of time on the site.

[ES] Hay arquitecturas que se deben a una metáfora: se avienen con un concepto que, si bien no las explica literalmente, facilita su comprensión. Así sucede con el Museo y Sede Institucional en Medina Azahara (1999-2008) de Fuensanta Nieto y Enrique Sobejano. Ya en la memoria del concurso los arquitectos sugieren la metáfora de la excavación arqueológica: no aspiran a construir un edificio sino a hallarlo, con suerte, bajo tierra. Como la ruina próxima de la ciudad-palacio, su proyecto quiere ser un hallazgo: no pretenden erigirlo; van a su encuentro, interpretando las huellas del tiempo sobre el lugar.
