The Ukrainian wheat market in the system of global food security: Wartime impact research

Abstract

[ES] El presente estudio analiza la transformación del mercado ucraniano del trigo bajo la influencia de la guerra híbrida y a gran escala durante 2019 2024. Mediante análisis comparativo e índices de concentración de mercado (Herfindahl-Hirschman, Linda y Gini), se estimaron los cambios en los volúmenes de exportación y en las rutas logísticas tradicionales. Los resultados evidencian que, pese a la baja concentración del mercado, las alteraciones en las exportaciones de grano ucraniano han intensificado las amenazas a la seguridad alimentaria mundial, destacando la necesidad de estrategias logísticas adaptativas y medidas de política internacional.

[EN] The proposed study analyzes the transformation of the Ukrainian wheat market under the influence of hybrid and full-scale war during the period 2019 2024. Comparative analysis and market concentration indicators (Herfindahl-Hirschman, Linda, and Gini indices) allowed us to estimate the export volumes of wheat to global markets and, therefore, the impact of the war in Ukraine on global food security. The study's findings indicate that, despite the low market concentration, changes in the volumes and traditional logistical routes of Ukrainian grain exports have increased threats to global food security.
