[EN] Jan Svankmajer's film work is one of the most unique, not only at Czech animated film, but at international film scene. His membership to Prague Surrealist Group and his practice of cinema as a facet of his artistic creation - which includes engraving, painting, illustration, collage, tactile objects, etc. -, places him outside mainstream cinema. However, for a full understanding of this figure it is essential to contextualize him within the long tradition of Czech animated film, which belongs both voluntarily and involuntarily, making him one of its most significant milestones.

[ES] La obra cinematográfica de Jan Svankmajer es una de las más singulares, no solo del cine de animación checo, sino internacional. Su pertenencia al Grupo Surrealista de Praga y su praxis del cine como una faceta más de su creación artística -que incluye grabado, pintura, ilustración, collages, objetos táctiles, etc.-, le sitúan al margen de las corrientes principales de la industria del cine. No obstante, resulta fundamental para una comprensión completa de su figura, contextualizarla dentro de la larga tradición del cine de animación checo, a la que pertenece tanto voluntaria como involuntariamente, constituyéndose en uno de sus hitos más significativos.
