dc.description.abstract[EN] Franklinothrips megalops (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Aelothripidae) is a predatory thrips that has been recently found in orchards infested with the new citrus pest Chaetanaphothrips orchidii (Moulton) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). However, the potential of F. megalops as a biological control agent of thrips pests is poorly known. For this reason, the aims of this thesis were: i) to analyze and compare the predation behavior of nymphs and adults F. megalops when they have access to eggs, nymphs, or adults of Ch. orchidii; and ii) to evaluate alternative preys to rear F. megalops. For this second aim, we measured several biological traits of the predator when it had access to eight diets. The results from the predatory behavior study showed, for the first time, that F. megalops can feed on eggs of thrips. Nymphs and adults of this predator also fed on nymphs and adults of Ch. orchidii. When compared between instars, F. megalops nymphs were more voracious than adult females when Ch. orchidii eggs were offered. The study of the potential alternative diets showed that F. megalops fed on diets based on Ephestia kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs. Those diets had the highest immature survivorship and fecundity and produced female-biased offspring. Among the four diets with E. kuehniella eggs, the diet based on E. kuehniella and Artemia cysts was the most promising for future research because it is more economical. Overall, our results indicate that F. megalops preys all instars of Ch. orchidii and artificial diets can be used to mass-rear it. These results will improve biological control of the new pest Ch. orchidii in citrus. en_EN
