Protective Treatments for Historic Bricks: The Case of The Grand Continental Hotel in Cairo (Egypt)

Abstract

[EN] In this study, three water-based nanostructured protective coatings were tested on bricks from the Grand Continental Hotel in Cairo, partially demolished in 2017. The aim was to identify sustainable conservation strategies for bricks intended for reconstruction. The comparative evaluation, preceded by material characterization using XRF and XRD, included contact angle measurements, colorimetric analysis, and infrared spectroscopy. The coatings were assessed for water repellency and visual impact. Results show that P1, a fluorinated siloxane, ensured good protection without color change and allowed water runoff on inclined surfaces. P2 caused slight darkening, while P3 showed IR issues, excluding it from further use. All coatings, being water-based, are safer for the environment and restorers. This study supports informed product selection and offers a replicable model for sustainable heritage conservation in Egypt.

[ES] En este estudio se evaluaron tres recubrimientos protectores nanoestructurados a base de agua aplicados sobre ladrillos procedentes del Hotel Grand Continental de El Cairo, parcialmente demolido en 2017. El objetivo fue identificar estrategias sostenibles de conservación para su reutilización. La evaluación comparativa, precedida por la caracterización de los materiales mediante XRF y XRD, incluyó medidas del ángulo de contacto, análisis colorimétrico y espectroscopía infrarroja. Se evaluaron la repelencia al agua y el impacto visual. Los resultados muestran que el producto P1, un siloxano fluorado, ofrece buena protección sin alterar el color y permite el escurrimiento del agua en superficies inclinadas. P2 provocó un leve oscurecimiento, mientras que P3 presentó problemas en el IR, por lo que fue descartado. Todos los recubrimientos, al ser a base de agua, son seguros para el medio ambiente y los restauradores. Este estudio ofrece un modelo replicable para una conservación patrimonial sostenible en Egipto.
