Recuperación de la memoria desde la gráfica: iglesia Matriz de Ambato 1904-1949

Abstract

[EN] The scarce material cultural heritage of the city of Ambato in the Republic of Ecuador represents a significant pillar in its historical memory and collective identity, which has been diminished by natural disasters and certain urban development policies. In the republican era, in 1904, a notable example of architecture began to be built the Catholic Matriz church, a vaulted stone building that gained great symbolic importance in the city. It partially collapsed in the 1949 earthquake and was eventually demolished to make way for the current modern cathedral. This present work, based on the research of historical documentation, graphically reconstructs the Matriz church, also providing a recount of its background that gave it meaning and its relation to the values of built heritage, emphasizing the importance of recovering historical memory through graphics. This work is based on the research project «Architectural analysis of the central nucleus of Ambato between 1895 and 1949: styles, types, techniques, losses, and continuities», which was conducted from 2021 to 2023, with the sponsorship of the Dirección de Investigación y Desarrollo of the Universidad Técnica de Ambato, Ecuador.

[ES] El escaso patrimonio cultural material de la ciudad de Ambato en la República de Ecuador, representa un pilar significativo en su memoria histórica y en su identidad colectiva, el cual ha sido mermado por los desastres naturales y por algunas políticas de desarrollo urbano. En la época republicana, en 1904, se comenzó a edificar un ejemplo notable de aquitectura que fue la iglesia católica de la Matriz, un edificio abovedado de piedra, que llegó a tener una gran carga simbólica en la ciudad, que colapsó parcialmente en el terremoto de 1949, y que finalmente se demolió para construirse la actual y moderna catedral. El presente trabajo a partir de la investigación de documentación histórica, reconstruye gráficamente la iglesia Matriz, haciento también un recuento de los antecedentes que le dieron significado y su relación con los valores del patrimonio edificado, subrayando la importancia de recuperar la memoria histórica desde la gráfica. El trabajo se deriva del proyecto de investigación «Análisis arquitectónico del núcleo central de Ambato entre 1895 y 1949: estilos, tipos, técnicas, pérdidas y permanencias» realizado del 2021 al 2023, con el patrocinio de la Dirección de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Universidad Técnica de Ambato.
