En defensa del scrapbook. Una revisión de los antecedentes populares del libro-arte

Abstract

[EN] Little has been explored regarding formal and conceptual commonalities between popular book forms such as scrapbooks and albums, on one hand, and artists books that deal with the autobiographical, collage aesthetics, and the so-called archival impulse. Dizzying breakthroughs in photographic technologies together with the expanding wave of increasingly cheaper prints during the Industrial Revolution, gave way to an incredible evolution of amateur, visual, and profoundly personal books throughout the 19th century. Perhaps a fear of banality and handicraft prevents the recognition of the influence of these types of expressions homemade and usually associated with women on contemporary artists books. Studying these popular genealogies of artists books will allow for a better understanding of certain historical, gender and subject matter questions regarding some of the most common ways of approaching artists books.

[ES] Poco se han explorado las afinidades formales y conceptuales entre formas populares de libros caseros como el scrapbook y el álbum, por un lado, y los libros-arte ubicados en los géneros autobiográficos, la estética del collage o el llamado giro de archivo, por el otro. El avance vertiginoso de las técnicas fotográficas y la creciente ola de impresos económicos de la revolución industrial propiciaron un gran desarrollo de libros visuales, amateur y profundamente personales a lo largo del siglo XIX. Quizá el temor a lo banal y lo artesanal impide reconocer la huella de estas manifestaciones, caseras y usualmente asociadas con las mujeres, en los libros-arte contemporáneos que los sucedieron. Estudiar más a fondo esas genealogías populares del libro ayudará a comprender ciertas cuestiones históricas, temáticas y de género en algunas de las maneras más frecuentes de abordar al libro-arte.
