Exploring the Dynamics of Aging in Place: A Qualitative Study in Southeast Atlanta

Abstract

[EN] This qualitative study, situated in Southeast Atlanta, investigates the perceptions and experiences of older adults regarding their living environments in the context of aging, functional needs, and home modifications. The research aimed to understand compensatory strategies for changes in functional ability, decision-making processes in home modifications, and factors influencing the transition to senior living facilities.A comprehensive methodology included in-depth interviews with community-dwelling older adults, followed by thematic analysis to extract insights into their experiences, challenges, and preferences.The study's objective was to explore how these adults compensated for changes in functional ability, the thought processes behind home modifications, and the considerations for relocating to senior living facilities.Key findings reveal that older adults face emotional and practical challenges in adapting their living spaces. They struggle with downsizing, adapting homes for accessibility, and balancing the need for autonomy against the practicalities of their changing abilities. Many participants expressed a deep attachment to their homes, driven by memories, familiarity, and a sense of identity, making the thought of relocation particularly distressing. Financial considerations emerged as a major factor influencing decisions about aging in place. The cost of home modifications, the financial strain of assisted living, and the potential loss of a lifetime home pose significant barriers. This economic dimension intertwines with the desire for independence, underscoring the importance of personal autonomy in the decision-making process.This study contributes to a nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding home environment adaptations for the aging population. It highlights the emotional, practical, and financial considerations that older adults face, providing valuable insights for architects, policymakers, and caregivers working to support aging in place effectively.
