The Cathedral of Baeza as a typological synthesis: geometric articulation and the phenomenology of the sacred space in Vandelvirian architecture through formal analysis

Abstract

[ES] Este estudio examina la Catedral de Baeza como un ejemplo representativo de la evolución arquitectónica sacra en Andalucía, destacando su capacidad para integrar estilos diversos en una unidad formal coherente. A través de un análisis tipológico y fenomenológico, se explora cómo la intervención de Andrés de Vandelvira redefinió el espacio interior mediante una organización geométrica precisa, una modulación rítmica de los soportes y una disposición espacial que favorece la continuidad visual y la experiencia introspectiva. Se comparan sus soluciones con las aplicadas en otras obras renacentistas andaluzas, como la Catedral de Jaén y la Sacra Capilla de El Salvador en Úbeda, evidenciando la versatilidad del lenguaje vandelviriano y su adaptación a distintos contextos funcionales y simbólicos. La investigación subraya cómo la arquitectura de Baeza, lejos de buscar la monumentalidad escenográfica, propone una atmósfera serena y equilibrada, donde la forma construida se convierte en un medio para la contemplación y el recogimiento, consolidando su valor como patrimonio y lección proyectual atemporal.

[EN] This study explores the Cathedral of Baeza as a paradigmatic case of sacred architecture in Andalusia, emphasizing its ability to integrate diverse stylistic influences into a coherent formal whole. Through a typological and phenomenological approach, the research examines how Andrés de Vandelvira s intervention redefined the interior space using precise geometric organization, rhythmic modulation of structural supports, and a spatial layout that enhances visual continuity and introspective experience. The cathedral is compared with other Renaissance landmarks in the region, such as the Cathedral of Jaén and the Sacred Chapel of El Salvador in Úbeda, revealing the adaptability of Vandelvira s architectural language to different functional and symbolic contexts. Rather than seeking monumental spectacle, the Baeza cathedral fosters a serene and balanced atmosphere, where built form becomes a medium for contemplation and spiritual engagement. The work positions the cathedral not only as a heritage landmark but also as a timeless architectural lesson in the synthesis of form, function, and perception.
