Arquitectura doméstica americana: los programas de las Casas de la Pradera y las Case Study Houses.

[ES] Este trabajo de investigación propone estudiar dos programas de gran relevancia en la arquitectura doméstica americana: por una parte, las Casas de la Pradera, diseñadas por Frank Lloyd Wright y publicadas en la revista Ladies Home Journal entre 1901 y 1907; y por otra parte, las Case Study Houses de California, presentadas en la revista Arts and Architecture desde 1945 hasta 1966. El objetivo principal de la investigación es, no solo destacar su importancia arquitectónica, sino también su representación y difusión. Más allá de observar los proyectos con una mirada puramente técnica o constructiva, se pretende desarrollar cómo estas ideas se presentan a la sociedad.

El eje fundamental de este proyecto será analizar la representación visual original de estas viviendas y cómo todo ello representa la domesticidad de una sociedad en un contexto histórico y cultural muy concreto. Para ello, será necesario observar los proyectos de ambos programas desde distintas perspectivas. Se estudiará distintos recursos gráficos como pueden ser la planimetría original, así como otros dibujos de los arquitectos de cada proyecto, las obras retratadas desde el punto de vista de los fotógrafos, la aparición de estas viviendas en otras obras audiovisuales, etc.

A lo largo de este trabajo, se plantearán los programas de las Casas de la Pradera y las Case Study Houses como programas tanto culturales como arquitectónicos, en los que la domesticidad se define tanto por la arquitectura como por la sociedad que la habita. Ambos programas presentan una serie de viviendas que no pueden entenderse como proyectos aislados, ya que forman parte de un programa complejo de ideas.

[EN] This research work proposes to study two programmes of great relevance in the American domestic architecture: on one hand, the Prairie Houses, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and published in the magazine Ladies' Home Journal between 1901 and 1907; and, on the other hand, the Case Study Houses of California, presented in the magazine Arts and Architecture from 1945 to 1966. The main purpose of this research is not only to highlight its architectural importance, but also its representation and dissemination. This goes beyond simply observing these projects from a purely technical or constructive point of view, the goal is to develop how these ideas are presented to society.

The fundamental axis of this project will be to analyze the original visual representation of these dwellings and how it represents the domesticity of a society in a very specific historical and cultural context. To do this, it will be necessary to discuss the projects of both programmes from different perspectives. The analysis shall contain various graphic resources such as the original plans, as well as other drawings by the architects of each project, the works portrayed from the point of view of photographers, the appearance of these dwellings in other audiovisual works, etc.

Throughout this work, the programs of the Prairie Houses and the Case Study Houses will be considered as both cultural and architectural programs, in which domesticity is defined both by architecture and by the society that inhabits it. Both programmes present a series of housing projects which cannot be seen as isolated projects, since they are part of a complex programme of ideas.
