Aproximación histórica de la arquitectura patrimonial victoriana : un caso de estudio, el Mercado de Smithfield (Londres) materia y color

Abstract

El trabajo de investigación que el autor ha elaborado, indaga sobre el fenómeno arquitectónico que se manifestó en el Reino Unido. Concretamente el estudio se centra en la ciudad de Londres y en la etapa comprendida de 1837 a 1901, durante el reinado de la Reina Victoria (s. XIX y comienzos del s. XX). Se estudia la importancia de las características de los materiales originales en la arquitectura Victoriana, así como de las aplicaciones cromáticas requeridas en esos momentos, bien como elementos propios configuradores de este tipo de arquitectura, bien como elemento ornamental añadido. El estudio se centra en la arquitectura civil, y en particular en el Mercado General de Smithfield, situado en el corazón de la City de Londres. A través de un estudio sistemático de sus características formales y legales se pretende contribuir a una mayor difusión del conocimiento de este conjunto arquitectónico patrimonial, a veces olvidado. En definitiva, el estudio da a conocer una arquitectura histórica de gran valor histórico, por lo que es necesario dar un impulso a un mayor estudio científico e historiográfico de este modelo arquitectónico como es: el mercado de Smithfield. Así mismo, dar a conocer la importancia de este tipo de arquitecturas del hierro, dando a conocer una parte histórica fundamental para futuros proyectos de restauración. Se muestra, finalmente, un análisis pormenorizado de las partes más afectadas, sus patologías y elementos impropios del modelo estudiado. Los objetivos de éste trabajo han sido: 1. Realizar un estado de la cuestión sobre el Mercado de Smithfild en Londres y su relación con la arquitectura Victoriana. 2. Proponer un estudio del estado actual de los materiales originales y estado cromático. 3. Proponer una recuperación de las partes afectadas por patologías y elementos impropios. 4. Poner en valor determinados elementos arquitectónicos para impulsar proyectos de gestión de las áreas abandonadas. Método de trabajo: Tratándose de un argumento bastante alejado, tanto geográficamente como conceptualmente de la realidad de la arquitectura del territorio de la península Ibérica, se ha considerado muy oportuno realizar una introducción cultural sobre la arquitectura y la evolución social de la época en la cual la reina Victoria regentó el poder en el Imperio Británico. En un segundo momento, el proyecto, se centra en la recopilación de los datos gráficos necesarios in situ, plantas, alzados, fotografías y documentos; un análisis y estudio de los materiales y del color en el estado original. Se pretende, por lo tanto, crear una imagen lo más completa y exahustiva posible del mercado general de Smithfield. La bibliografía consultada es de carácter general: histórica, gráfica y divulgativa, con el objetivo de obtener una imagen lo más generalizada posible en un principio, para ir especializando progresivamente y poder lograr, así, un estado de la cuestión realizado de la forma más completa posible. Finalmente, con el objetivo de aportar un estudio legislativo para futuros trabajos que se puedan llegar a tener en consideración de realizar, se ha realizado una panorámica sobre el marco legal que concierne la conservación del patrimonio histórico-arquitectónico en la ciudad de Londres, y que actúa sobre el mercado de Smithfield.

The research work that the author has developed, inquires about the architectural phenomenon that was manifested in the United Kingdom. Specifically the study focuses on the city of London and the stage from 1837 to 1901, during the reign of Queen Victoria (19th century and early 20th century). It is studied the importance of the characteristics of the original materials in the Victorian architecture, as well as the chromatic applications required in those moments, either as own elements that configure this type of architecture, or as an added ornamental element. The study focuses on civil architecture, and in particular at the Smithfield General Market, located in the heart of the City of London. Through a systematic study of its formal and legal characteristics it is intended to contribute to a greater diffusion of the knowledge of this patrimonial architectural set, sometimes forgotten.

In short, the study reveals a historical architecture of great historical value, so it is necessary to give a boost to a greater scientific and historiographic study of this architectural model as it is: the Smithfield market. Also, to make known the importance of this type of iron architectures, giving to know a fundamental historical part for future projects of restoration. Finally, a detailed analysis of the most affected parts, their pathologies and elements improper of the model studied is shown.

The objectives of this work were: 1. Perform a state of the issue on the Smithfild Market in London and its relationship with Victorian architecture. 2. Propose a study of the current state of the original materials and chromatic state. 3. Propose a recovery of the parts affected by pathologies and improper elements. 4. Put in value certain architectural elements to promote projects of management of abandoned areas.

Work method:

Being a rather remote, both geographically and conceptually, from the reality of the architecture of the territory of the Iberian peninsula, it has been considered opportune to make a cultural introduction to the architecture and social evolution of the time in which Queen Victoria ran the power in the British Empire.

In a second moment, the project focuses on the compilation of the necessary graphic data in situ, plants, elevations, photographs and documents; An analysis and study of materials and color in the original state. It is intended, therefore, to create a picture as complete and comprehensive as possible of the general Smithfield market.

The bibliography consulted is of a general character: historical, graphic and informative, with the aim of obtaining an image as generalized as possible at first, to progressively specialize and to be able to achieve, thus, a state of the art realized in the most complete way possible. Finally, with a view to providing a legislative study for future work that may be considered, a survey has been carried out on the legal framework for the conservation of the historic-architectural heritage in the city of London and that acts on the Smithfield market.
