El legado de Arts &Architecture : Case Study Houses

Abstract

En enero de 1945, la revista californiana Arts & Architecture, lanzó el programa Case Study House, un proyecto complejo cuyo objetivo era dar solución a los problemas de vivienda a los que se enfrentaba Estados Unidos en la posguerra.

Con este Trabajo de Fin de Grado se pretende indagar y profundizar en la arquitectura resultante de este programa, y remarcar cómo su arquitectura creó un referente internacional, definiendo el estilo Mid-Century Modern.

En primer lugar, se analizará cómo surgió Arts & Architecture, y cómo a partir de la nueva identidad de la revista surge el programa Case Study House. Esto supone una revolución en la vivienda social de la posguerra, poniendo a disposición de familias de ingresos medios proyectos de viviendas innovadoras.

Además, se estudiarán ocho ejemplos de proyectos que han tenido mayor trascendencia debido a su carácter altamente tecnológico. La peculiaridad de estas viviendas reside fundamentalmente en su estructura metálica de piezas estandarizadas.

In January 1945, the Californian magazine Arts & Architecture, launched the Case Study House Program, a complex project whose aim was to solve the housing problems faced by the United States in the postwar period.

This End of Degree Project aims to investigate and examine the resulting architecture of this program, and emphasize how its architecture created an international reference, defining the Mid-Century Modern style.

Firstly, it will analyze how Arts & Architecture emerged, and how from the new identity of the magazine the Case Study House Program arises. This represents a revolution in postwar social housing, making innovative projects available to middle-income families.

In addition, eight projects will be studied, because of their great importance, due to their highly technological character. The peculiarity of these dwellings resides fundamentally in its metallic structure of standardized pieces.
