EL LIBRO DE ARTISTA "CHESS BOARD" DE MARCEL DUCHAMP: PROPUESTA DE PLAN DE CONSERVACIÓN PREVENTIVA. (FONDO DE ARTE Y PATRIMONIO UPV)

Abstract

Marcel Duchamp es considerado uno de los artistas más influyentes del siglo XX: se adelantó al arte conceptual, provocó al espectador y a las galerías al dar al objeto cotidiano a la categoría de arte y elevó a otro nivel la importancia de los sentidos sensoriales en el arte. La reproducción ¿Prière de toucher¿, será una de las obras que trataremos en este trabajo.

La obra objeto de estudio de este Trabajo Final de Grado es el catálogo Chess Board de Duchamp, realizado para una exposición de dicho artista en la Galería Ronny Van de Velde del 15 de septiembre al 15 de diciembre de 1991. Esta obra ha sido facilitada para su estudio por la colección de Libros de artista de la Universitat Politècnica de València: se trata de un contenedor de madera que simula un tablero de ajedrez y alberga diversos objetos, fotografías y artículos.

Procederemos a analizar el total de la obra centrándonos particularmente en una de sus piezas más problemáticas: una cinta de audio que recoge una grabación de Duchamp. La carcasa de dicha cinta presenta una reproducción en látex de la obra Prière de toucher, la cual se encuentra en un deficiente estado de conservación, afectando a las demás obras que están en contacto con ella.

El presente trabajo consistirá en documentar la obra antes mencionada, determinando qué objetos contiene este catálogo, al tiempo que realizar un estudio técnico para considerar los posibles riesgos que pueden afectar a un material tan sensible y degradable como el látex y cómo esta degradación influye en los demás elementos del catálogo. De este modo, propone un plan de conservación preventiva adecuado a las necesidades de la obra.

Marcel Duchamp is considered one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century: he was ahead of conceptual art, provoked the viewer and the galleries by giving the everyday object to the category of art and raised to another level the importance of sensory senses in art . The reproduction "Prière de toucher", will be one of the works that we will treat in this work.

The work under study of this Final Degree Project is the Duchamp Chess Board catalog, made for an exhibition by the artist in the Ronny Van de Velde Gallery from September 15 to December 15, 1991. This work has been facilitated for its study by the collection of Artist's Books of the Universitat Politècnica de València: it is a wooden container that simulates a chess board and houses various objects, photographs and articles.

We will proceed to analyze the total of the work focusing particularly on one of its most problematic pieces: an audio tape that collects a recording of Duchamp. The casing of this tape presents a reproduction in latex of the work Prière de toucher, which is in a poor state of conservation, affecting the other works that are in contact with it.

The present work will consist of documenting the aforementioned work, determining what objects this catalog contains, while carrying out a technical study to consider the possible risks that can affect such a sensitive and degradable material as latex and how this degradation influences the other elements of the catalog. In this way, it proposes a plan of preventive conservation adapted to the needs of the work.
