Coloniality and museums: architecture, curatorship, management, and the perpetuation of colonialist structures

Abstract

[EN] Coloniality is a system born from colonialism that to these days affects several individuals subjected to oppression through racism, sexism, and classism. These tools were developed or enforced during colonization and are still present in the structures commonly used in museums. In this text, we address this issue and examine its origins and repercussions in museums. We pay particular attention to the German context, and we analyze the case of a museum in the Thuringia region. Finally, we propose some alternatives aiming at decoloniality.

[ES] La colonialidad es un sistema nacido del colonialismo que hasta nuestros días afecta a varios individuos sometidos a la opresión a través del racismo, el sexismo y el clasismo. Estas herramientas se desarrollaron o aplicaron durante la colonización y todavía están presentes en las estructuras comúnmente utilizadas en los museos. En este texto, abordamos este problema y examinamos sus orígenes y repercusiones en los museos. Prestamos especial atención al contexto alemán y analizamos el caso de un museo en la región de Turingia. Finalmente, proponemos algunas alternativas que apuntan a la decolonialidad.
