| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | [EN] The understanding of the short- and long-term behaviour of biobased composites during immersion in water is of great importance for its performance in a wet environment as an eco-friendly packaging material. In this study, bionanocomoposite films based on poly(lactide) (PLA) plasticised with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and reinforced with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) were prepared. The presence of PEG and the influence of NFC (1, 3, 5 wt%) on the physio-chemical properties were investigated after immersion in water for different times (7, 15, 30, 60, 90 days) at different temperatures (8, 23, 58, 70 °C). The water absorption behaviour in terms of saturation, diffusivity, solubility, and permeability was assessed. The changes of the morphology, molar mass, and thermal properties of the samples through immersion were characterised with field emission scanning electron microscopy, gel permeation chromatography, thermo gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. At the lower immersion temperatures (8 and 23 °C) a mass gain followed by a stable equilibrium was found while at higher temperatures (58 and 70 °C) the samples containing PEG started to linearly lose mass after the initial water absorption. After storage in water, especially at higher temperatures, the specimen become white, very fragile and disintegrate into smaller pieces. The immersion in water, dominantly in higher temperatures, also promoted a rough surface with cracks and pores in the morphology as well as a drastic decrease in molar mass. Furthermore, the materials show a reduction of the decomposition and melting temperature and an increase in crystallinity, due to hydrothermal degradation. In summary the critical effect of temperature and time during water immersion and the contribution of PEG and NFC on the performance of the bioplastic materials is assessed and thus the usability and limitations in a wet environment demonstrated. | es_ES |
