RENAZER - Estación de Reutilización Creativa y Fábrica de Mobiliario Reciclado en Nazaret.

Abstract

[ES] Los residuos plásticos han invadido los océanos de todo el mundo. Los desechos que encontramos en superficie solo son la punta de iceberg, ya que representan menos del 15% de todos los plásticos que hay en el mar, afectando a todo tipo de especies marinas y aves acuáticas. El mar Mediterráneo se ha convertido en una gran ¿sopa¿ de plásticos, concentrando un 20 % de residuos a nivel global.

Este problema, que afecta a su vez a todas las costas, se puede observar en el litoral valenciano, con un gran número de pescadores que denuncian esta situación. Nazaret, un pequeño barrio al sur de Valencia, no ha quedado ajeno a esta realidad, acumulando grandes cantidades de desechos en el último tramo del río Turia y en la zona del puerto. Ello ha acarreado la pérdida de biodiversidad y la degradación de la zona norte del barrio, más conocida como Cocoteros, lugar donde se ubica el proyecto.

Ante este problema surge RENAZER, una Estación de Reutilización Creativa y Fábrica de Mobiliario Reciclado en Nazaret. Una propuesta ligada al programa ¿Upcycling the oceans¿ (¿Suprarreciclaje de los océanos¿), que comenzó en la Comunidad Valenciana y que se fue extendiendo hacia toda la costa mediterránea y al norte de España. Se trata de una iniciativa que reúne a pescadores y barcos de arrastre, quienes recuperan los residuos plásticos del mar, depositándolos en contenedores, los cuales serán enviados a una industria del reciclaje. Esta industria recicladora transforma los residuos plásticos en un polímero llamado granza, y que posteriormente se envía a una industria transformadora que produce numerosas aplicaciones como nuevos envases plásticos, ropa, utensilios, paneles, bloques o mobiliario.

La última de estas aplicaciones, el mobiliario reciclado, posee una gran conexión con la historia de la industria valenciana. Una tradición ligada a ferias como la Feria Muestrario, de principios del siglo XX, y que se ha extendido hasta la actualidad, fomentado por la creciente exportación e importación. Un diseño de calidad que ha hecho que Valencia sea nombrada Capital Mundial del Diseño 2022.

En este contexto surge, por un lado, la Fábrica de Mobiliario Reciclado, un lugar donde se fabricarán y exhibirán los últimos diseños de muebles creados a partir de plásticos reciclados.

Por otro lado, la Estación de Reutilización Creativa aunará el espacio de la fábrica con una componente más social, donde se proyectarán espacios de talleres, salas de investigación e innovación, espacios expositivos de piezas recicladas, así como áreas de recogida de residuos plásticos, acercando el proceso de reciclaje a los habitantes de Nazaret.

Otro de los puntos clave del proyecto es la recuperación del patrimonio olvidado en torno al área de Cocoteros y el Grao con la reutilización de edificios abandonados como la antigua estación de Nazaret, la antigua Estación Térmica y Transformadora de Valencia, algunas viviendas de especial relevancia local de Nazaret, así como los últimos vestigios del ya desaparecido barrio de Cantarranas.

De este modo, el proyecto nace como un gran puente que cose a todos los edificios uniendo ambas orillas del río Turia a través de una pasarela peatonal y generando distintos espacios públicos en torno al agua y al gran parque que se genera en la ribera. Este ¿lazo¿ va recorriendo el proyecto, convirtiéndose en pavimento, rampas, escaleras, pasarelas y mobiliario urbano, en el exterior e interior de los edificios. Así mismo, el puente se transforma en ¿dispositivos condensadores¿, pequeños módulos que se sitúan colindantes a los edificios y que albergan elementos de servicio y comunicaciones, liberando así la planta de los edificios existentes.

El agua también se introduce en el proyecto a través de la creación de embarcaderos que, por un lado, permiten el transporte de mercancías por vía fluvial y, por otro lado, generan

Surface litter is only the tip of the iceberg, representing less than 15% of all plastics in the sea, affecting all types of marine species and waterbirds. The Mediterranean Sea has become a huge "soup" of plastics, concentrating 20% of waste globally.

This problem, which is affecting all coasts, can be seen on the Valencian coast, with a large number of fishermen denouncing this situation. Nazaret, a small neighbourhood in the south of Valencia, has been no stranger to this reality, accumulating large quantities of waste in the last stretch of the River Turia and in the port area. This has led to the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of the northern part of the neighbourhood, better known as Cocoteros, where the project is located.

RENAZER, a Creative Reuse Station and Recycled Furniture Factory in Nazareth, was created in response to this problem. A proposal linked to the "Upcycling the oceans" programme, which began in the Valencian Community and has spread to the entire Mediterranean coast and the north of Spain. It is an initiative that brings together fishermen and trawlers, who recover plastic waste from the sea and deposit it in containers, which are then sent to a recycling industry. This recycling industry transforms the plastic waste into a polymer called pellets, which are then sent to a processing industry that produces numerous applications such as new plastic packaging, clothing, utensils, panels, blocks or furniture.

The last of these applications, recycled furniture, has a strong connection with the history of Valencian industry. A tradition linked to exhibitions such as the Muestrario Fair, from the beginning of the 20th century, and which has extended to the present day, encouraged by growing exportation and importation. A quality design that has given Valencia the title of World Design Capital 2022.

In this context, on the one hand, there is the Recycled Furniture Factory, a place where the latest furniture designs created from recycled plastics will be manufactured and exhibited.

On the other hand, the Creative Reuse Station will combine the factory space with a more social component, where workshop spaces, research and innovation rooms, exhibition spaces for recycled pieces, as well as plastic waste collection areas will be projected, bringing the recycling process closer to the inhabitants of Nazaret.

Another of the key points of the project is the recovery of the forgotten heritage around the Cocoteros area and the Grao with the reuse of abandoned buildings such as the old Nazaret station, the old Valencia Thermal and Transformer Station, some houses of special local relevance in Nazaret, as well as the last vestiges of the no longer existing Cantarranas neighbourhood.

In this way, the project is born as a great bridge that links up all the buildings, joining both banks of the river Turia by creating a pedestrian walkway and generating different public spaces around the water and the great park that is generated on the riverbank. This "loop" runs through the project, becoming pavement, ramps, stairs, walkways and street furniture, both inside and outside the buildings. The bridge is also transformed into "condenser devices", small modules that are placed adjacent to the buildings and house service and communications elements, thus freeing up the floor plan of the existing buildings.

Water is also introduced into the project through the creation of piers which, firstly, allow the transport of goods by river and, secondly, generate spaces for meetings and leisure around the river, reactivating the banks of the Turia.
