Abstract

[EN] What is the current role of warehouses in modern supply chains? Which warehouse activities or processes have a significant effect on the overall operational efficiency? How is the overall operational efficiency of warehouses assessed? Such questions are more and more frequently asked by key stakeholders in the logistics and warehousing sectors as a response to the huge technological advances of the last decades and the massive implementation of e-commerce, which means that the orders are being delivered straight to the end customers and not only to retailers or shops. Nowadays, these customers demand smaller order sizes, earlier deliveries and greater variety and availability of stock according to [Man-2012]. Bearing all these facts in mind, and aiming to retain customer loyalty, the proper functioning and management of the supply chain is of great significance [Kos-2017]. The warehouses have a great repercussion on the functioning of the company and on its total costs, therefore they are a key element for the effective operation of companies in the logistics sector, which determines the success of modern supply chains [Fra-2002; Bar-2019]. Moreover, the warehouse accounts for a high percentage of the company's total costs due to all the resources it requires, such as labour, space and equipment [Ack-1997]. A properly structured warehouse is essential for the best way of developing the storage processes for saving time and, therefore, optimising costs so that the money can be invested in other areas of the company that are more necessary. A company's warehouse is its main supplier and its organisation is key so that functions as common as the conservation, protection, control and supply of products are not affected at any time [Ges-2017]. As a result of all of the above, it is concluded that new ways of evaluating warehouse management must be studied in order to reduce costs. The principal objective of this project is to identify the most important indicators or parameters to be able to evaluate the management and performance of the operation of the warehouse in general and, more specifically, the processes that are performed in the warehouse, aimed at obtaining an efficient warehouse. As a result of these indicators, it will be possible to classify the storage systems and evaluate their performance.

[ES] Esta tesis de maestría se basa en un trabajo de investigación y esto significa que la mayoría de las fuentes de información utilizadas en este proyecto son libros, artículos o trabajos científicos El objetivo principal de esta tesis de maestría es identificar los indicadores clave de rendimiento relevantes que son fundamentales para evaluar un sistema de almacén. En primer lugar, como se ha mencionado, se llevará a cabo una profunda investigación para tener un amplio conocimiento de cuáles son los Indicadores Clave de Rendimiento más importantes para evaluar y controlar un sistema de almacén. Para lograr este objetivo, también es muy importante tener una visión general de los tipos de actividades que se llevan a cabo en un almacén y saber qué tipos de sistemas de almacén existen en la actualidad. En segundo lugar, con toda la información recopilada, se realizará un estudio sobre qué parámetros clave de rendimiento son los más importantes para evaluar y controlar un sistema de almacén. Paralelamente, se buscarán más de 500 perfiles de personas que trabajen en una industria relacionada con la logística o la ingeniería y se enviará la encuesta a todos ellos. Por último, cuando se cierre la encuesta, se analizarán todos los resultados y se realizará un estudio de los resultados de la misma.
